Data.gov

Updates thanks to Phil Ashlock, GSA:  philip....@gsa.gov

mentioned that he recently spoke with other countries that are using the DCAT standard for their data catalog and we discussed trying to coordinate updates to the specification in the near future. DCAT is the metadata standard that forms the basis of the Project Open Data Metadata Schema v1.1.

Data.gov/metrics

The recently updated Data.gov metrics page features information such as dataset count by participating agencies and their component sub-agencies, the number of views for specific datasets, and dataset count by organization type.

The Opportunity Project

Updates thanks to Drew Zachary, DOC: DZac...@doc.gov

The Opportunity Project is a process that engages the tech sector to create digital tools that expand American economic opportunity. The Department of Commerce connects experts from the tech and non-profit sectors with agency problem statements on priority issues including jobs, transportation, and housing, and facilitates 12-week sprints to create new digital tools to address these problems.

We are seeking new tech companies, problem statements and data sets to work with and hope that you get involved!  Here are some ways to participate:

1.       More information on The Opportunity Project, including links to the 40+ tools built so far, is here https://opportunity.census.gov/.  Our collection on data.gov is data.gov/opportunity.

2.       If you're interested in suggesting a problem statement for tech teams to focus on, or open data sets/APIs for teams to use, please contact: DZac...@doc.gov.

3.       Feel free to use or share the playbook: https://opportunity.census.gov/playbook.html, which outlines The Opportunity Project process for civic tech organizations, universities, code academies, or anyone else seeking to adapt the process on their own. We just ask that you give us a heads up so we can keep in touch with the community!

The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014 (DATA Act) by U.S. Department of Treasury

Featured presentation by Daniel C. Cain Danie...@fiscal.treasury.gov and Justin J. Marsico Justin....@fiscal.treasury.gov

·         The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014 (DATA Act) makes Federal spending data more accessible, searchable, and reliable. It will make it easier to understand how the Federal government spends taxpayer dollars but will also serve as a tool for better oversight, data-centric decision-making, and innovation both inside and outside of government.

·         The DATA Act required that the government develop data standards to ensure the reporting of reliable, consistent federal spending data for public use. This model, called the DATA Act Information Model Schema (DAIMS), created the first government-wide standard to connect budget, accounting, procurement, grant, loan and insurance data. The DAIMS sets an important foundation to organize data across the entire federal enterprise, connecting data elements that were previously segmented in separate databases and it can be extended in the future to include other relevant data.

·         In May, Treasury launched beta.USASpending.gov, which will run concurrently with the existing USASpending.gov over the summer. The new website will allow taxpayers to examine nearly $4 trillion in federal spending each year and see how this money flows from Congressional appropriations to local communities and businesses.

·         Treasury's DATA Act analytics team is working to "get the data moving," by conducting analysis of federal spending data, and by working with federal agencies, stakeholders, and the public to create insights into the federal government's programs and operations.
