Subject: [OAS Fellowship] Invitation to Public Events on March 26, 2015 in Washington D.C.
Dear friends and colleagues,
I hope this message finds you well. Today, I would like to inform you that we are –finally– launching our new Fellowship program! Since you all have somehow been involved in the development process in the last months, I’d like to keep you posted and invite you to two public events we’re organizing in the context of the Fellowship’s first seminar, to mingle with our Fellows and share your experience.
In February, we selected 25 highly qualified and motivated fellows for our first edition (out of 657 applications, for the process see http://redirect.state.sbu/?url=www.oas.org/OpenGovFellowship) who come from 16 different countries of the Americas, different sectors of society and very diverse personal and professional backgrounds (please find their short profiles attached, in Spanish). This first generation of Fellows just finished a two-week online course on “Open Government Strategies in the Americas” and is in this very moment boarding their planes to come to the US for our first seminar. We are very excited to spend an intensive week of discussions and workshops in Osprey Point, Maryland (http://redirect.state.sbu/?url=www.ospreypoint.org) with the group and some exceptional speakers from around the hemisphere (please find enclosed the Agenda as well as List of participants for this first seminar, in Spanish).
While we chose Osprey Point for its secludedness and lack of distractions, we also want to offer our Fellows an opportunity to learn about great ideas and network with interesting people here in D.C., which is why we’ll come to the city for one day on March 26 for two public events, to which I would like to invite you very cordially:
For the morning, we organized a panel discussion on “Innovating for Democracy: Citizen Participation in the Digital Era”. This event takes place in the Hall of the Americas in the OAS Main Building, 17th Street and Constitution Av. NW, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Speakers include:
- Pablo Collada, Executive Director, Fundación Ciudadano Inteligente, Santiago de Chile
- Michael Shifter, President, Inter-American Dialogue, Washington D.C.
- Matt Lira, Republican Strategist & Spring Fellows 2015 at Harvard Universities Institute of Politics, Cambridge, M.A./Washington D.C.
Moderator: Kevin Casas-Zamora (Secretary for Political Affairs, OAS, Washington D.C.)
For the afternoon, we organized an Open Government Networking session (4:30 p.m. at the OpenGov Hub, 1110 Vermont Ave NW #500, Washington, DC 20005) in cooperation with the OGP Support Unit. We will have 5-minute lightning talks about their work and ideas by the following colleagues:
- Hazel Feigenblatt (Managing Director, Global Integrity, Washington D.C.)
- Valerie Lorena (Executive Director, Young Americas Business Trust, Washington D.C.)
- Alejandro Pareja Glass (Senior Specialist, Modernization of the State, Inter-American Development Bank, Washington D.C.)
- Lalanath de Silva (Director, Environmental Democracy Practice, World Resources Institute, Washington D.C.)
- Juan Pablo Guerrero (Network Director, Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT), Washington D.C.)
- Joseph Foti (Program Manager, OGP Independent Reporting Mechanism, Washington D.C.)
- Marcos Mendiburu (Senior Specialist, Governance Global Practice, Banco Mundial, Washington D.C.)
- Joel Gurin (President, Center for Open Data Enterprise, Washington D.C.)
Moderators: Alonso Cerdán Verástegui (Program Manager, OGP Support Unit, Washington D.C.) & Milagros Freyre (Senior Specialist, OAS, Washington D.C.)
This event will be followed by a networking happy hour and requires prior registration. Please feel free to invite colleagues, friends and family to the event using the following link: http://redirect.state.sbu/?url=https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-government-networking-tickets-16203345643 (please copy into Chrome or Mozilla browsers.)
It would be wonderful to see you at one of these events!
For the time being I wish you a great weekend and hope to talk soon.
All the best,
Matthias
