The 16th annual National Freedom of Information Day Conference will be held Friday, March 13.
The conference will begin at 8:15 a.m. and end after a midday program. It will be held at the Knight Studio at the Newseum. Attendees should use the “C Street” (Group) entrance to the Newseum, which will open at 7:45 a.m. for this program only. Admission to the FOI Day program is not paid admission to the Newseum, which opens at 9 a.m.
The annual FOI Day Conference is hosted by the Newseum Institute’s First Amendment Center in cooperation with OpenTheGovernment.org and the American Library Association. It brings together access advocates, government officials, judges, lawyers, librarians, journalists, educators and others to discuss timely issues related to transparency in government and freedom of information laws and practices.

The American Library Association will announce this year’s recipient of the James Madison Award, presented annually by the ALA to individuals or groups that have championed, protected and promoted public access to government information and the public’s right to know.
This year’s program will feature a discussion of “Open Government: Successes, Challenges, Prospects,” presented by OpenTheGovernment.org;
and a discussion of the first ten years of the “Sunshine Week” national open records initiative, presented by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the American Society of News Editors, including a preview of a major reporting package from The
Associated Press, McClatchy and Gannett/USA Today on a decade of open government activity.
Also featured will be remarks by Miriam Nisbet, former director of Office of Government Information Services, National Archives. Additional speakers may be announced later.
