Good morning,

I am a Software Developer with Adventist University of Health Sciences in Orlando, Florida.
Our team is interested in using U.S. Government APIs to first cache, and then populate educational institutions for use on our application.
We are especially interested in FICE and CEEB codes.
How would this group recommend I get started with using government resources to access this information if available?

Sincerely,

Alexander R. Ortiz

The College Scorecard data may be helpful, which lists all colleges that are eligible for federal financial aid.
Here's where you can download all the raw data: https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/data/
... which may be easier to consume via the API: https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/data/documentation/
(Note that the second link also has documentation of the various fields and structures in the data)

Would it be possible that there were an API for public and private primary and secondary schools as well?
I think that this thread will turn into a request for an API that lists institutions by name, address, phone number, category, etc.
Using this data, a great number of Universities could use this data to create lightning fast applications that would not require external searches for CEEB/FICE codes and eliminate database cruft consisting of improperly named institutions.

Is it possible for me to create a regularly updated dataset of Institutions using other datasets?
Is there a vetting process?

I'm willing to take this on as a personal project.

Sincerely,

Hi Alex,

That's a great idea for an API. We don't offer that at the moment but with enough interest we might! Could you share your idea here: https://github.com/usedgov/API-Program/issues/1. Our Github is watched more closely by leadership. Thanks!

Hi Alexander,

There are apis available here: http://data.deptofed.opendata.arcgis.com/ for primary and secondary schools.  The data housed there are for what is available in the mapping application at https://nces.ed.gov/programs/maped/ .  They dont have CEEB/FICE codes but the schools have nces ids so possibly you can link that way.

thanks,
Amy
