Hi everyone,

just to introduce myself to the list, I've just discovered unhosted and remoteStorage and I'm very excited about them.

I have a couple of single page apps. I'd like to migrate to remoteStorage this year. However, I'm having a couple of problems getting started.

I want to test my apps against a remoteStorage server that saves files to disk. I installed the starter-kit which runs, but I believe the server doesn't save files. I tried reStore but it blows up ( https://github.com/jcoglan/restore/issues/28 ) It sounds like the other servers listed on http://remotestorage.io/get/ are incomplete or outdated.

As of Jan, 2015, Is there a definitive, latest-spec working reference server to try developing against?

If not, which is the closest server to something I want? Should I persevere trying to get reStore to work on my machine? Or try to hack the starter-kit server to save files?

cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the community!

The remoteStorage project is running community forums for developer
support. It would be helpful if you can ask future questions there, so
other developers can find the conversations as well:

http://community.remotestorage.io/

Now, in regards to your question: unfortunately, the situation is not
optimal at the moment, as reStore is kind of the standard server (and
usually working well), but the remotestorage-server npm package is the
only one tracking spec changes live when new spec versions are released,
as it is written by the spec editor Michiel de Jong.

The -server package is only a library that enables you to build servers,
though, and it's not as well tested and widely used as reStore. As
reStore is reasonably up-to-date in regards to the spec version, I would
definitely recommend trying to get that going.

We'll gladly give you live support on IRC, as these things can be a bit
difficult to solve via emails and GitHub comments. We're hanging out in
#remotestorage on Freenode.

Hope this helps a little bit. I'm sure we can get this sorted out soon.
Also, it would be great if you could keep notes of the problems you run
into and either open GitHub issues (or even better pull requests) or
create topics on the forums, so that we can improve the situation for
other new developers, as well as existing ones.

Cheers,
Sebastian (raucao/skddc)
