Howdy.

Umlaut has "search inside" and "limited excerpts" areas, powered by
Amazon, Google, HathiTrust, etc. Not sure how many are using them.

By default they currently show up in the main column.

It's actually pretty easy in configuration to switch screen areas
between main area and sidebar, if you can figure out the magic
incantations. (Will get easier and more documented in Umlaut 4.1).

Here at JH, we've decided to switch them to the sidebar.

My inclination is to change default Umlaut configuration to track what
I'm doing at JH -- I like the default configuration to actually be
maintained tracking 'best practices' at least at one location, otherwise
the default configuration can easily end up abandoned and representing
something nobody actually recommends.

But is it disruptive if I change this as a default? In an upcoming 4.1
release? Or is it even a bad choice that nobody else wants? You could
easily configure it back even if it were changed as a default.

Any opinions?

Hi Jonathan,

I think it's perfectly reasonable to use JH configuration as default for Umlaut installs. Also great to hear that the Umlaut incantations will be made more approachable.

Cheers,

Ronan
