It's a little crackly!

Hi All.

I wanted to buy a dedicated scanner but was told about these dongles that do the same thing, via your PC. So I bought this

I followed the instructions and am now using the SDR Sharp software as instructed. Now WFM radio is clear but I cannot get anything else. I really wanted to listen to aircraft and perhaps ACARS but even though there's a crackle on 118.575 for eg, it is unreadable. 

Tried both antenna that came with it (do I need to mount them on a biscuit tin?) also tried it on an indoor SKYSCAN antenna on the windowsill. The magnetic base stuck to a biscuit tin, it still only gets radio stations. 

Now, I have a Royal Discone outside, how the cabling is after being up years I don't know but it doesn't seem to pick up much more than the stock telescopic whip that came with it. I am, however going to buy a new antenna and a dedicated airband antenna and have them installed soon.

Am I doing something wrong in the settings?

Also are there any other pieces of software other than the SDR sharp software I can use with this dongle. When I followed the instructions for setup via the site https://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-quick-start-guide/ it gave me a desktop folder with these in it

Other than using the SDR SHARP software I don't know what the others do. Can anyone help me please as to what else I can do with this dongle and whether or not it needs some kind of setting up?
