Good day all. I am new to the group, but NOT new to SDR based receivers.
When I was (more or less forcibly) changed over to Windows 10 recently a BIG problem arose quite quickly with the software for my SDR system.
I was using the "Irish" version for over 2 years and had updated it from time to time.
To make matters MUCH worse I had already published an article in "Silicon Chip" magazine on a upgraded SDR receiver!!
Now, I have not got a working system any more!!!
I have downloaded and tried at least 4 versions of the software available on line, but nothing seems to function. Mostly this is "dongle"
trouble, in that the system will not properly recognise the Easicap  ones which I have used for so long.
When I first set up I had similar problems with Windows 7 and it was at about the 5th or 6th iteration that things finally worked.
So my request to members is this- Has anyone found a reliable software version for Windows 10 home 64 bit?
Just today I have downloaded and tried 3 different softwares, and NONE of them work as designed.
Hoping an experienced Software man can help and old engineer like me!!

Everything I use works flawlessly on win10 64 bit home version. SDR#,
DSD+, DSD, Unitrunker. No issues with any of them.

Well. I deleted all my old versions (carefully) and tried again with
SDR#. Carefully going through the entire setup again
after using Zadig. It STILL doesn't recognise the device!
The device has not changed, the cable has not changed. Only the software.
Now, I am basically a hardware based engineer, though working with
computers for almost 50 years.
I do recollect however that "Silicon Chip" magazine's original article
on SDR# had a whole lot of setup routines to follow. Like when to
connect your "Dongle".
Obviously I am missing something! So can anyone tell me where I can find
an updated complete installation instruction set for SDR#?

I presume you were canny enough to have run Zadig as administrator. But, I
thought I'd mention it incase that had slipped your memory. You should be able
to find it in DeviceManager, by the way.

Make sure that you place the dongle driver in the same location as SDRSharp.exe.

Yes, I did run Zadig as an adminstrator, in fact I am the sole operator of this machine and it should default to that anyway.
Unless, of course Windows 10 has done something else new?
Now, if Zadig is in the same directory as SDR# I presume that should do the trick? That's what I have done in any event
and Zadig was run from there. It definitely tries to start but always seems to have trouble with device recognition.
Also (of course) I am treating my device as a USB device and under RTL2832 so I remain flummoxed!

You cannot run as administrator in Win 10 without using the right click pop-up
menu's "Run as administrator" entry. If you did not install it that way, you
should go back and do so.

I had thought that if Zadig was run within the same folder the dongle driver would automatically be correctly located?
BTW I also get an odd result on screen when the SDR software panel comes up the setting area for modes, bandwidths
etc is distorted out of recognition. Have had 3 more goes today, same result getting VERY fed up!!!

You are coming in with only XP experience? From Vista on you must install by
running Zadig as administrator not just from an account that is allowed to
elevate privileges to administrator. Right click on Zadig. Go down the popup
menu to "Run as administrator". Run Zadig that way. When the UAC prompt comes up
tell it to go ahead.

Hi Clifford,

I was unaware of the Easicap dongle. Presumably it uses the
standard USB audio system, but I can not tell from easily available
information.

It is cheap however so I have ordered two of them. Some day I hope
I will find the time to compare several low cost alternatives to
use with the Softrock SDR.

I think there are several other low cost USB audio units you might use.
Most probably some of them work OK under Windows 10...

A few points. Firstly I have used Windows 7 64 bit for several years. In fact I have used every version of Windows since 2.0!!
Secondly, I have done a right click as specified, but there is NO heading called "run as administrator" to be seen.
There is command prompt (admin) and computer management however, which of these is it most likely to be?
According to Microsoft my Windows 10 home 64 bit is completely updated and otherwise runs better that 7.
So I'm afraid I have to ask another question. Thanks for your help so far.
Cliff Wright.

Looks like you have two problems if what you say is not carelessness on your
part. 1) You may not really have an account with administrator priveleges (Run
as administrator) is usually the second item on the popup menu - at least on Win
10 pro, with home YMMV) 2) you seem to be determined to make it not work.

So I'm afraid I have to abandon you to your own devices (pun intended.)

Well jdow (especially) it looks as though this group is not going to be much help!
Yes, I do run Windows 10 home 64 bit and NO it does NOT have the command from the right mouse button you quote.
Yes, I also got into the system and made VERY sure that I was set as the administrator and NO, zadig runs but install rtl-sdr. bat gives a quickly flashed error message.
Too fast to read it properly. Everything else is as before.
Remember I used SDR# for a year or two under windows 7 HP 64 bit with few problems.
I may be long in the tooth, but I am not exactly inexperienced. This is nothing like I have ever come across before.
Members may be able to help me with one thing though. Exactly which version of SDR# have you used successfully with Windows 10 and from which site did you get it?
I know for certain that the Airspy version does not give a proper display of receiver setup (bandwidth, mode etc) it is all "crushed" up in that area.
Hoping a little more information will solve some of this.
Clifford Wright

You obviously have something fscked up on your system. You *CANNOT* install the
libusb.sys driver to a device if you don't satisfy a UAC prompt. And, you
cannot, without seriously compromising the system, login as "adminnistrator" at
the login prompt. That went away after XP died. (There is a way. It is
questionable if it really works. If you are using it, it doesn't really work.)
If you are a member of the administrators group then you CAN run as
administrator. And it should appear on the right click popup menu for Zadig.exe.
You should also be able to run it from an elevated cmd prompt (requires "Run as
administrator" again) and have it work.

If you right click on "Computer" or "This PC" can you select "Manage". If so can
you check your user name for being in the administrators group. (If you are not
you will probably have to reinstall. But, then, you made sure you were an
administrator - a concept that does not apply in Win 10 they way it did in XP
and earlier. But, then, you know everything and I know absolutely nothing even
though I develop device drivers and video software on Windows. That just makes
me a dumb broad, right?)

You need to press SHIFT whilst Right Clicking then you will get "Run as Administrator"

Sorry to have upset you jdow. But I have done just about everything suggested including reloading C++. Everything I look at (and I have done it several ways) tells me that I am the administrator and I have to put my admin password in when I boot the system. I have tried different placements for SDR#, in the c:\\ directory as well as in the program directories. It does seem very unclear in instructions though whether the newer versions should be placed in the program files or the program files (86), but I have tried both ways there also without success.
Please note, I may be 75 years old but I am not totally senile and of course completely removed each trial before reloading in a new location. BTW, no, I don't think you are a "dumb Broad", you might be interested to know that I still have some books given to me for my practical support in setting up the Women's lib movement at Auckland uni back in the early '70's.

Is that a Home edition trick? On Pro that's not needed. (It may depend on some
of the options that are set. I went through them and made them sane for me; and,
I really don't remember which ones I changed. I believe I changed more than I
left alone.)

Gee, I'm only 70+X myself and still develop code.

And if you get me NEAR a women's lib sort who opens her mouth on the subject er
she'll bug out or accept a LARGE piece of my mind. I do NOT agree with those
phoney lezzie bimbos.
