Hi,

I was trying to remap F1-F4 to various other keys like delete, enter, brackets, etc.
Unfortunately when I pick the input source things don't seem to be working.

I am on El Capitan.
See attachments.

Any idea of what is going wrong?

Best.

As you can see from the subject line, my ISP strips off zipped files. But it really doesn't matter in this case.

You can't remap the F-keys using a keyboard layout such as Ukelele creates. All F-keys produce the same output for a start, which tells me that the operating system isn't looking at output, but rather at the actual key code that is generated. You'll need to find a different mechanism to achieve this. Perhaps Karabiner can do it?

Marco: Here’s the Karabiner website:
https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/

John:
This comes up so often, that it may be an idea to make the F-keys – and the other unchangeable ones – a slightly different color or shading on the keyboard map, and/or have a message coming up when the user attempts to re-assign them.
These days, I’m not too easy about those download sites like above. How to know which are safe and which aren’t?

Or a pop-up message when attempting to modify these keys. Or both.

Good ideas! I'll look into them in the next few days.

I don't know that one, either. I pay to be a member of MacUpdate, so avoid some issues that way. I realise not everyone is willing to do that, but can't give a good answer in general.

Thanks guys!
I solved using Better Touch Tool.

Marco:
That’s a nice find! One would expect that Better Touch Tool would be all about gestures, but it certainly looks like it has great potential:

Even pressing and releasing modifier keys twice can trigger an action; I remember a question here not too long ago where this was on the wishlist.

The simplest solution at this point is to make all the F-keys
unchangeable, since they will never be of use in setting up a new
keyboard layout. At this point, I think that I'll leave the other
special keys editable.

The 3.1 version is going well, and I've found and fixed a few bugs in
the process. Hopefully it will be out in the coming week.

Just a funny thought:
You could even have a link under those keys, so that when a user tries to edit them, a browser window opens with an explanation why this is not a good idea (tab, cursor keys) or impossible, and links to Karbiner, BetterTouchTool, ... and what was the other one, KeyGen? And also a link to an Apple page about that System Preferences panel where the Modifier Keys can be swapped/deactivated.

Or you could have the relevant section of the user manual pop up.
Mmm, maybe not just a funny thought...

Gé, John mentioned a simple, but fast solution, and a more complex one to be added later.

Yeah, I know, I was just intending to make a joke about it, but then it became more.

John’ll know what he wants to do, don’t worry...
