ISTR a suggestion a while back that the headroom in Froghall Tunnel
might be improved by lowering the water level. Anyone know whether
anything was done about this during the extra-long stoppage this year?

AFAIR they were going to lower the weirs along the length in order to increase
the headroom....nopw whether they will also dredge the length is another
question!!!!!

The rumour I heard was that the level was kept high, due to a concrete
encased pipe that ran across the canal bed? I think this is being seen to.

Here is the headroom in 1997...................too bl00dy low!

Beatty at the time was1.8M to the front roof fender eye. The problem was the
height of the cabinside handrails. Having bounced our way through in a hire
boat, I can confirm that the low point is just in from the Stoke side
portal. I SHALL be going through it next year!

If you wait a couple of years you'll be able to go a little further -
work starts in 2003 on restoring the first lock of the Uttoxeter
Canal and the basin just below it - initially as extra visitor mooring
space to accommodate more visiting boats once the level's been
lowered and they can get through the tunnel, but possibly
eventually as the first stage of restoration towards Uttoxeter.

PS (can't resist a chance to plug WRG): if you want to help, there's
a Waterway Recovery Group Canal Camp working on this project
on 9-16 August. See http://www.wrg.org.uk for details. (in a few
days' time, when we've finalised the 2003 programme and put it
online)

Splendid news - I have always thought that first lock at least
was ripe for restoration.

Can you get from Uttoxeter to the T&M? Then we would have the
Staffordshire Ring!

In engineering terms it would be perfectly feasible to make the
River Dove navigable from Uttoxeter to where it crosses the T&M
just east of Burton: about 15 or 20 miles of new river navigation
with a lock every mile or so. I'm sure David Hutchings could easily
manage it!

However given amount of opposition to schemes such as the
Higher Avon, I reckon that politically a new lateral canal - although
probably requiring more work and costing more money (but still
perfectly feasible and probably easier than things already
proposed like the Wilts & Berks east-west Swindon bypass) -
would be more likely to succeed.

Let's see how the Bedford-GU link gets on.
