I was a little worried that my 10 year old ALFA 159 would not pass its MOT today, but it did AND I have only done 2000 miles since the last one as a) I have no job to go to and b) I have cycled and walked most places. Good job I got that new subframe last year!

My car has only done 4000 miles in the last year. Since I often use
means of transport that is more convenient for short journeys I don't
know my total road mileage.

I don't even know why we still have a car.
Oh -- my wife likes it for doing the weekly shopping.
But -- with registration, insurance, smelly fuel, money used which could
be put to better use etc, it would be cheaper for us to just use taxis.
And I just spent ££ to renew my driver's licence.

Same here. I spent the years 17-60 driving to every country in Europe and so we only need ours for going on local walks etc.

I still haven't recovered from swldx...@gmail.com paying less in auto insurance than me.

I thought I had the lowest motoring costs on the planet.

225.89 gbp, fully comp, 12k miles, with business use, does include
driving other cars (something that some insurance companies have been
silently dropping), but I'm not covered on the Nurburgring (I think
every policy I've ever had has explicitly exluded teh Nurburgring).

I will have to downsize the annual mileage from 10000 to 2000.

Mine is 3000. The longest single journey I do each year is 500 miles
these days.
I probably do more than that on my bike each year.

Geico discontinued their program where you get 75% off if you drive less than 2 miles for an entire month.

I feel much better now. There was never much hope in Brexit keeping the pound down for long.

One up to me I pay Zero VED, Zero tax and Zero insurance (this includes
full breakdown cover and tyre replacement).
All I pay for is petrol.
OK it is a Motability car but still at Zero my motoring costs must be
among the lowest possible

I think if I was driving less than 2 miles a month I would get rid of
the car

Your costs are the same as they would be for anyone else doing the same
mileage in the same sort of car and with the same sort of accident
record (or absence thereof).

It is the price which differs from the norm.

That's probably why they got rid of the plan. I was the only one on it. I needed to haul 4 water bottles every month or so, so it worked out for awhile. Everything else was by bike.

An even lamer rational: In an emergency you could call Geico and start driving immediately. You lose whatever days you had accrued at the reduced premium but the vehicle was available 24/7. I don't know the actuarial data but you need a motor vehicle in an emergency about as often as you need a gun to shoot home invaders.

After the plan had been discontinued I got swimmers ear about 2:30 am. I never considered driving. I cycled to the ER where they always ask the question:

"How did you get here?"

In a lot of ER situations your answer to this question may determine who they treat first. Arriving on a bike obviously can't compete against arriving on a gurney.

I told the truth. Fortunately the ER only had a couple other patients and the doctor was a swimmer who knew ear ache pain first hand.

I was back home in the arms of Morpheus by 3:30 am.

Musk has already opened one of his tunnels under LA traffic, free of charge. The EV manufacturer said pedestrians and cyclists come first. Only after they are taken care of will those who can afford cars be able to use the tunnels.

Very democratic.

This article is a few years old:-

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/tax/10638283/How-much-we-give-the-state-in-tax-and-how-much-we-get-back.html

It is estimated that 60% of households are net beneficiaries of the tax
system, getting back more in benefits than they contribute. The neutral
point is a gross income of between £35,000 and £38,000.

So, many motorists are paying their vehicle taxes with one hand what
they receive from taxpayers with the other. If I am a beneficiary, then
by cycling I am doing taxpayers a favour. If I am a taxpayer then by
cycling I am not giving away as much to a bunch of freeloaders.

Lesson ends.
