Unfortunately common sense is a rare breed and seems to be repelled by
Lycra. Recently near here a road was being excavated to get at a
leaking water pipe. One carriageway and a narrow footpath were usable
and traffic and pedestrians were controlled by manually operated
lollypop stop/go boards. At times traffic in both directions and
pedestrians were halted as a JCB shifted earth into a lorry for
removal. Several times I observed cyclists of the angry MAMIL variety
riding past the stop/go boards on stop and along the road or pathway.
It was of course perfectly safe for them to do so - but the JCB
operator had to stop lifting soil whenever they did it which delayed
everyone else in the queue (including several bicycle riders on old
bikes and wearing who almost universally obeyed the signs without any
fuss.)
