Essex Hams Review of 2019

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:42 AM PST
https://www.essexham.co.uk/news/review-of-2019.html

The start of a new year means its time to look forward, and also to review
the last 12 months of activity. 2019 was another busy year for Essex Ham.
Here’s a quick look at what we got up to:

Once again, we ran several successful evens events at Galleywood Common,
which are always a good opportunity to play radio, learn new skills, try
new things, and socialise.

As is tradition, weve put together a montage of the years activities have
a look at what weve been up to

Essex Ham Video Review of 2019

We were again on-air with GB callsigns for St George’s Day and the June
Summer Solstice, and this year ran events to support 50 years since the
lunar landing.
Essex Ham Group Shot 20 Apr 2019

Essex Ham was approached by David Whitehouse, author of a book on the Lunar
Landings, and we were able to help to facilitate getting his name sent to
the moon, courtesy of a moonbounce event organised by Tom M0ABA from the
Essex DX Group.

Essex Ham was approached to provide some technical advice by London’s Tate
Modern, for an exhibit called Ten Minute Transmission, with live signals
from the ISS.

We were at the Basildon Street Science event in July to promote the hobby,
getting the local mayor and MP to try amateur radio.
Essex Ham Supporting the Basildon Science Street Festival

In June, Dorothy M0LMR gave a talk at the “Women in Tech” event in Southend.

As always, we supported both of the Acorns 2m Activity Days, & were active
for the VHF National Field Day.

Essex Ham was proud to be awarded the Region 12 Club of the Year award, and
to receive third place as National Club of the Year at Hamfest, where
Dorothy M0LMR also received an award.

At the RSGB Convention, there was much discussion about the future of
clubs, and Essex Ham was mentioned at a couple of talks.

We were in the press after running a county-wide net to spot and track the
D-Day Flyover in June. We’re still working with GN1NHS, with a few
interview about amateur radio being recorded at Bletchley Park for use on
hospital radio.

And we were again invited to promote amateur radio at the March 2019
Southend Raspberry Jam.
Supporting women in tech, the award-winning M0LMR

In October, the team was once again invited to take part in a large and
very busy JOTA activation at the Belchamps Scout Activity Centre, with an
estimated 200 cubs & scouts in attendance over the two days. BBC Essex
visited as part of their Essex Quest, getting some PR for amateur radio in
Essex as well as JOTA.

It’s always great helping people to get their licence, and August 2019 we
worked with G8BBC to get BBC World Service Technology Presenter Gareth
Mitchell licenced and able to use the shack at BBC’s Broadcasting House. We
trained Gareth online, held the practicals at the BBC, and the exam at our
Essex Exam Centre – one of the last exam sessions before the syllabus
change.

Also in 2019, the first Essex Ham kit, in the form of the Hamtronics UK
Repeater Timeout Kit. Out thanks to Andrew M0ONH

In August of 2019, Pete M0PSX and Kelly M6KFA were out on Radio Caroline
thanks to Keith G6NHU.

Essex Ham was also at various ham events, supporting other clubs in the
region. We had a table at the SEARS Canvey Rally at their new location, at
two Suffolk RED events, and at Langdon Hills ARS Progression Nights and
Laindon RC club nights.

The Monday Night Net continues to be a big focus, with just under 110
unique callsigns joining in 2019. Thanks to Dorothy M0LMR for running the
monthly YL net and to Rachel G6AMY and Andrew M0ONH for chairing on a
Monday, as well as Pete M0PSX.
Monday Night Attendees in 2019

Our free Foundation Online course took a break in August, to allow changes
to be made for the syllabus changes. Despite the break, we enrolled just
under 400 candidates nationally in 2019.
Foundation Online Classroom

We’d like to thank everyone who supported us during 2019, taken part at an
event, joined us on the air or been active on our site.

Thanks again to everyone whos supported us, and helped us to spread the
word about amateur radio. Here’s hoping for a busy, and positive, year of
amateur radio in Essex in 2020!

GB3DA Repeater NoV Expired Dec/Jan 2020

Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:10 AM PST
https://www.essexham.co.uk/news/gb3da-nov-expired.html

Update 10 Jan 2020: GB3DA appears to be back on-air. The RSGBs ETCC page
for GB3DA reports that the repeater was Licensed on Wednesday the 8th of
January 2020.

What happened?

According to the official UK Repeaters site, the NoV for GB3DA expired on
22 December 2019. It was reported to Essex Ham on Friday the 3rd of January
2020, that the official RSGB ETCC website entry for GB3DA was reporting:
THIS STATION SHOULD BE NON-OPERATIONAL AS THE KEEPER NoV HAS EXPIRED

IT MAY BE AN OFFENCE UNDER THE WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY ACT TO COMMUNICATE
WITH/THROUGH THIS STATION.

According to the ETCC site, the NoV expired on 22 December 2019

See https://www.ukrepeater.net/my_repeater.php?id=752

When this was brought to our attention, we contacted ERG, who were already
aware of the issue. Our thanks to Steve for raising this concern in our
Groups.io chat group.

GB3DA Expiry Notice, 03 January 2020

Update 04 Jan 2020:

In response to the online comments about our reporting of this item: For
the avoidance of doubt, Essex Hams reporting of this issue was done
following a group message from a member in our Groups.io mailing group at
15:55 yesterday. This was the first that we were aware of the matter. We
contacted ERG promptly to make sure they were aware of this, which they
confirmed that they are. We believe that as GB3DA is the primary repeater
for Essex, and carries our nets, it is important that announcements like
the one from RSGB/ ETCC are passed on to our members and the wider amateur
radio community in and around Essex. The NoV expiry is a public domain
matter and we have simply quoted the wording stated on the ETCC website.

To those who feel that Essex Ham has used this as some form of point
scoring exercise, we would remind them that we are supporters of ERG,
promote them weekly on-air and online, we rely on their repeaters for our
weekly net. Obviously, losing access to GB3DA for our nets does not benefit
us, or our net participants. We always have reported on public domain
matters affecting DA, such as the recent Fusion upgrade and the ERG AGM.

We stand by our decision to publish this, as we feel that users of this
repeater should be aware of the ETCC announcement, and make their own
judgement on whether or not to use GB3DA. We feel that it would be
irresponsible not to pass on this information or to try to cover it up.
Hopefully, this clarifies our position.

Essex Club Field Event List 2019

Posted: 31 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST
https://www.essexham.co.uk/news/essex-club-field-event-list-2019.html

With the year about to end, well soon be removing the 2019 events from our
Essex Amateur Radio Events Calendar to make room for what will hopefully be
a busy 2020.

As we did last year, we thought we should preserve our events list. Our
This Years Essex Field Events list is dynamic so changes for each year,
and the 2019 list will be replaced with the 2020 list for that reason,
heres a dump of the list of Essex-wide field events that took place in 2019.

Well done to all of the clubs across the county for getting out-and-about
in 2019 to promote the hobby to the public, as well as providing field day
opportunities for members and local amateurs to get active on-air. Heres to
a busy 2020 of amateur radio in Essex.

As 2019 draws to an end, wed like to thank all Essex Ham members whove
taken part in one of our weekly nets, as well as the Essex YL Net.

The Monday Night Net launched in October 2011. Essex Ham’s Net has now
become a regular on-air meeting place for both newly-licensed hams as well
as experienced amateur radio operators, and enables local hams to share
information, ask for advice, and get to meet new voices. We believe we are
one of the busiest nets in the Essex area, and thats down to the support of
net regulars.

https://www.essexham.co.uk/news/iss-sstv-activity-28-dec-to-1-jan.html

From Saturday 28th December 2019 to Wednesday the 1st of January 2020,

This is always a great opportunity to try to receive some live images from

cosmonauts Alexei Leonov, Valery Bykovsky and Sigmund Jaehn.
The transmissions are scheduled from December 28, 2019, starting at 11:00

shutdown.
Transmissions will be on the standard frequency of 145.800 MHz and in the
PD 120 format.
The Polish ARISS Team prepared an award for participants to this SSTV
