There will be no Alexanderson Day over-the-air VLF transmission on 2 July
2017 from SAQ, the Alexanderson alternator station in Sweden. SAQ
periodically schedules transmissions with the nearly century-old behemoth
that operates on 17.2kHz from the World Heritage Grimeton Radio Station.
SAQ said the event was cancelled due to ongoing maintenance work at the
site. []

The International Astronomical Union has named a celestial body after a
radio amateur. Space physicist and radio amateur Asta Pellinen Wannberg,
SM3UHV, is a professor at the Department of Physics at Umeå University. She
has made a ground-breaking effort to use scattering radar when studying
meteors that are activated when small particles penetrate the atmosphere.

The RSGB is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Anthony Kent,
G8PBH, as Chair of the RSGB Examinations Standards Committee. Tony obtained

A professor of art and history to oversee the RSCB's 3-tier
coffer-filling examination debacle seems as relevant (NOT!)
as that scheme and the RSCB itself!!!!

BUT the RSCB's committee? What more evidence is needed to
warn the Charity Commissioners of the duplicity of
the so-called independence of the RCF?

Those who ignore the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them,

Can you imagine if Spike had done National Service? He'd be one of those
National Service types who would have you believe he was a Colonel, if
not a General, who had singlehandedly saved the nation from some
calamity and probably insist he was still referred to by his, supposed,
former rank. Just look how he refers to his imaginary time in the CS. I
suppose being a postman doesn't offer much opportunity for 'imaginative'
stories.

M3OSN, even with the socialisation syndrome that he presents
in his postings to the NG, would be a better choice than
a professor of history.

One wonders whether the RSCB intended misleading propaganda
by describing Anthony Kent as a professor, for it seems
that the professorship / chair is irrelevant to amateur radio.

Well said.

It's the same with elections, and the dazzling future the candidates and
parties promise you. The mess that they want to get you out of is the
same dazzling future you were promised last time they wanted your vote.

The young buy in to the far-reaching promises, the 1000-yard stare and
the sweeping hand gestures from the charismatic leaders, not knowing any
better. 20 years of being kicked in the teeth changes their views, but
too late - there's another crop of youngsters out there blinded by the
light shining out of someone's backside.

When they could have had Churchill, who could have employed the army to

If he was answering a GCSE question, he would get minimal marks for his
knowledge. Labour certainly did waste Marshall aid, from which we did
rather well (significantly more than Germany, for example) but it was
spent on many things- including essentially overseas aid. Rather than
being targeted at specific investment programmes, it was treated as
extra general income. It soon ran out and yielded no long term benefits.
Germany, for example, invested in modern industry (ditto Japan). Their
return was the long term income that yielded.

At the time, the political 'mind set' hadn't recognised the changing
world- you could argue it still hasn't. Even if another party had held
power, we can't be sure they would have done much better. Look at the
way the Tories waste money on overseas aid today.

That is about 20% true. One can offer private dentistry are normal and
affordable prices. Personally, I find cosmetic dentistry on the
worried well a complete waste of my time. I prefer to spend my time

Nice to find someone who has his 'whole' patient in mind.

The 'silly' cost of UK dental care was made clear when I broke a tooth
in France last year. I was able to get an emergency appointment on a Sat
morning. The dentist did the required work, including xrays etc. The
total bill (they weren't interested in my EHIC) was under 25 Euro. It
wasn't worth claiming on the travel insurance. As far as I could tell,
it was the equivalent of an NHS dental centre where people who used the
(French) state scheme went. I assume they had to pay, as I did.

Conversely, I've recently paid for a family member to have 'root canal'
work done- £850, including so special filling. A special 'cap' is also
needed, yet to be done, the total bill is expected to be about
£1500/1600. It couldn't be done on the NHS. Had she not has exams, it
would probably have been cheaper to send her to France for a holiday and
have the work done there ;-)

If the patient is on the NHS and "needs" something, it HAS to be
supplied on the NHS. All root treatments and the necessary crowns are
available on the NHS.

Perhaps someone might like to guide poor Brian on the method for getting
a refund.

Naah. It's his conspicuous consumption. He'd rather pay £1000 for
something the rest of us pay £200 just to boast about how much money
he has; not gained by his or his wife's efforts, but the lowly
impoverished taxpayers in the real world.

Wasn't your wife working for the NHS during your periods 'between

One might think that someone with health issues who takes caravan
holidays in Europe might be better informed on the health facilities and
procedures there, rather than in which pavement cafe to sit and drink a
glass of Leffe Blonde. And Brussels is a mere £58 return on the right
day, with a trivial 3-hour journey time - far cheaper to be treated
there than here. OTOH this particular cake might just be a little
over-egged.

He is just trying to stir as usual, don't worry about it.

Don't forget, his supposed travels are all fantasies.
