Tweenies comments from a 19-year old (go figure)

I'm 19, almost 20 years old, and I actually watch Tweenies (go
figure). Here are a bunch of things I noticed:
1. Why do I have a feeling Bella's voice changed? I mean, compare the
opening titles of the 2 series and when she says "I'm Bella"... she
sounds higher pitched in the 2nd series of eps. (Just to tell you that
I do watch the show, that's the girl with the blue head and is
sometimes seen with a wand)
2. And speaking of voices... Milo sounds like he's voiced by a girl!
(That's the boy with the purple head and spikey hair who likes
rocketships)
3. And what's with the recycling of musical numbers? I mean, if you
watch the show long enough you'll notice that 2 different eppys start
with the same song (in fact, their 2nd go at "1-2-3-4-5", the song
about fish catcing, looks rather similar to their first).
4. More like a comment towards a specific eppy. Okay, there's one eppy
with a marching and, where Jakey (the short orange-headed boy with
tall hair) doesn't want to play pretend trumpet (not exactly possible
since it was squished during practice... and would it have been too
much for him just to carry it with him, when he was telling Judy, the
green-headed woman with purple yarn for hair, about it?), doesn't want
to play drums or cymbals... and yet he does all this in the first
"surprise time" in quite some time. Huh?

You, are on fucking crack!

seriously though, didn't 1 or possibly 2 of the "actors" get fired a while
back?

Well I have a small brother and I am consequently a Tweenies expert,
so I hope I can answer your questions.

Because it did. The actress changed. The first one had a baby or
something.

It is! Obviously they couldn't use a grownup man, it would sound as if
the lad was on steroids, and never work with children. So for cartoons
(Bart in The Simpsons) and radio (the children in the Archers are
voiced by the lady who plays Schula Hebden/Archer whatever her name is
now) women do the boys' voices.

Take it from me, 4 year olds neither notice nor care.

See previous answer. But yes, the repetition is annoying to us adult
viewers.

There used to be a fan website which contained genuinely interesting
information about the show - ie, how big are the actors, how to tell
the different series apart from the sophistication of the suits and
animatronics, and of course the controversial (but successful)
addition of the 2nd dog whose name I forget.

But now I can't find said site.

Indeed. They only care if you do anything to stop their channel or their video
tape playing for more than a second.

Well possibly a Tweeny. You never know what goes on on the set....

What I especially love about the Tweenies is when they do the bits
filmed in the park, or wherever, and everyone is walking past these
extraordinary-looking neoprene folk - without batting an eyelid.

It's surreal.

What's the new one for younger kids with the weird long nosed things
called? Well, anyway, it stars Rocket The Frog, who has to be the
funniest thing on Beeb1 for years. Comedy genius.

It's not so much the "don't work with children" idea, it's because if you
had a boy actor playing the boy character and the show lasted several years,
but the character was still the same age (like Bart Simpson) you'd have to
replace the actor when his voice broke.

Just curious... is Jake voiced by a girl as well? He sure sounds like
he's voiced by a guy.

Izzles. You can find it on the BBC site whose address is in the show's
closing credits, actually.

Actually, Milo is voiced by a man. It's actually not difficult to speak
like a kid if you use falsetto (for the musical amongst us). He just has
flexible vocal chords...

As for Jake... yes, that's also voiced by a man. It's slightly more
obvious due to the very deep voice he has every now and then.

The site you were probably looking for was tweenieland.co.uk / .org.uk
I was the webmaster of this site. I'm glad you found it so interesting :)

Unfortunately, when the .co.uk domain expired, and I was asked for £94 to
buy it off Freenetname, I told them where to stuff it. I'd lost interest
in the site a few months before anyway ! Too much hassle. It was way too
busy, and I was always being moaned at by people for not putting up
enough kids stuff. Alas, they missed the target audience of the site...
it really was only supposed to be for the adults who found themselves
watching the show with their kids, and were curious about what goes on
behind the scenes, as well as the hidden adult references that all good
kids programmes have.

I don't think we ever did do an article on the new dog, Izzles, though. I
can't say I ever liked the idea of it, and it seems that Tweenies has now
been put to rest anyway. The production company have been told that the
BBC will commission no more new episodes. You'll just have to make do
with the original 390 being repeated until the ends of the earth...

Tweenieland was such a successful site with hundreds of hits daily, and
the BBC didn't seem to care one jot. A shame I had no option but to close
it, but hey...

And yes, I am a lunatic. No quips, please.

Eddie

In that case you are probably the man to answer me a question.
First off, in mitigation, I have a nearly-three-year-old daughter, so that's
my excuse... :-)

Can you tell me why, in the "Aquarium" episode, while the "real" Max and
Judyfeature on location, rather unconvincing puppet replicas of the Tweenies
themselves are used? Even my little one noticed that they looked different!
Ran out of money and couldn't afford 4 actors on location, perhaps? It
looked weird, anyway!

While we're on that subject, my 3-year-old is currently a little upset that
the cranky old video chose to swallow (then bite in half) the tape on which
we had recorded about 30 episodes of the ever-cool "Pingu" for her.

She's quite selective about what she likes and the mischievous penguin is a
particular favourite.

Any kind soul out there who'd be able to copy the episodes if I send them a
blank tape and postage? (I don't have episode titles, but I can probably
describe which ones were on it.)

Thanks

What the world needs now, is not love sweet love, but a DVD of the Complete
Pingu. It makes precious little sense but it's compulsive viewing.

I've got a few sound files of Pingu and after finding it embarrassing after the
first time I played it as my 'Windows Start' sound, I tried to delete them.
Just as the room was extremely quiet, and my supervisor was on an important
phone call and others higher up were in the room, I tried to delete the file of
Pingu sticking his tongue out loud and long. I accidentally clicked on it twice
and knew my fate was sealed as Windows Media Player opened up and I couldn't
stop it within the split-second it took to make the sound.

I now have the sound off at all times.

One of the amusing features of the otherwise unfunny TV Go Home TV
show was a spoof kid's show called 'The Flailers'. They looked very
similar to The Fimbles, (although predated them I think) except that
The Flailers had enormous genitals which flailed around.

It was very funny, funnier than it sounds.

My brother has the Shockwave based BBC PC game 'Pingu and Friends',
which is not just cool because it's Pingu (loads of excellent
snow-based games) but also because it's narrated by Felicity Kendal,
who tells you off if you get things wrong and Hands Down Instructions.

16:9 on the wedding night? Kinky.

I'd settle instead for Ania Dykczak (the blonde from Show Me The Funny)

And here are some more:
1. OK, I just saw the eppy about the Tweenies having to clean up
Doodles' (that's the red and yellow dog) toys by putting them onto
Doodles' beanbag... and Doodles clearing the toys off the beanbag. In
short, the "lazy" ep. They read "Lazy Ozzie", a story about an owl
who's too lazy to just fly down to the ground... but NOT too lazy to
jump on to other animals to get to the ground (go figure). I seem to
remember that they read that story in the first series. Another
instance of recycling, I guess.
2. I also seem to notice that the BBC logo in the corner in the titles
is in different postitions. Sometimes it's almost falling off the
screen, and sometimes it's smaller and has a significant gap between
the logo and the edge of the screen.
Yes, I actually do notice these things, because I'm grown up. Then
again, I doubt its target audience (4-5 year olds) was meant to
notice...

But it's not "the funny" you'd want her to be showing, right? :-)

Possibly, but I'd want to know first whether what I'd experience would be
"A Walk In The Forest" or "Whispering Grass", or perhaps as bare as that desert
in the second scene of The Hobbit. Like Gandalf's map, I'm curious.

Heh. I've heard it all before in the hundreds of e-mails I got over the
couple of years I ran the site ;)

It happens in all the outdoor episodes in those from the first year of
130 episodes. While the Tweenies are in the studio, the objects on the
set can be scaled upwards dramatically to make them look small. If the
same actors went out on location, with the suits on, they'd look about
six feet tall. Perhaps a bit large compared to the real heights of kids
that age ! So hand puppets are the only option.

Most people agreed that they looked ugly, so they scrapped the outside
puppets altogether from the next two years of Tweenie episode. A sensible
move, I'd say !

As for the adults, it doesn't particularly matter, because they end up
about the right height compared to other adults on the outdoor scenes.
They just used a 5ft tall actor, who looked about 6ft with the suit on.

I hope this helps explain it :)
