Carrying on from an earlier thread about streaming music.

As per the title I am now looking for a wifi transmitter which has a
phono plug so that I can plug it in to my headphones socket on my amplifier.

At the moment I have some cheapo wifi speakers which have there own
transmitter and is plugged in the said socket.

I found this but not available:

The plan is to receive music audio on a wifi portable speaker. My amp
and tv are only receivers from what I have found by experimenting.

Unless you buy a matching pair of transmitter and receiver, I wouldn't
expect them to talk to each other.

Ok thanks.

So all the ones which have a USB plug would be no good to me then?

I have a bluetooth transmitter which is plugged into a phono socket on
my amp, and works great with 2 different make blutooth speakers

I rather think you're confusing digital transmission with analogue.

Bluetooth is a digital standard and in general different
transmitter/receiver combos will work.

I suspect your speakers use an analogue "wifi" link (like FM but maybe a
different frequency range) and transmitter and receiver need to be matched.

This shouldn't be confused with full digital wifi as used to link
routers/PC's/tablets etc.

There are radios and amps that can stream music from a digital source on a
network (or the web) but if your speakers are working off a speaker socket
dongle this is not true wifi in the streamable sense.

It seems like I was confusing the issue, but I do know that there is a
difference. Bluetooth is supposed to be better for clarity over wifi,
which is better for distance.

The existing wifi speakers do have there own wifi transmitter which as I
say is plugged in to a phono socket on my amplifier. Before I bought the
amp, the wifi TX was plugged into my tv.

I have found that both tv and amplifier are just receivers. I plugged an
existing USB Bluetooth dongle, which I use on my laptop, into the usb
socket of both tv and amp. I then switched on a bluetooth speaker and it
didn't connect to either, but if I plug in the Bluetooth transmitter
into the phono socket, it does work ok.

Sp that leads me to think I will have to go down the bluetooth road now.

Just an addon here:
I had the loan of a wifi and bluetooth speaker, and while it works on
bluetooth I could not get it to connect to my network. Not to play the
music on my nas drive, which bluetooth will do.

I have a bluetooth receiver with 3.5mm output, it was plugged into my
bedside radio (Pure Evoke3) to allow playing from laptop/tablet, but I
found the bluetooth mouse or anything less than line-of-sight would
cause interference to the audio - replaced it with a chromecast audio
(which is wifi instead of bluetooth) and zero interference.

when you say "wifi" do you actually mean "wireless"?

Yes I do mean wireless wireless as in not bluetooth

Adrian Caspersz

Yup, Wireless transmitters/receiver units described as 2.4GHz use their
own manufacturer individual wireless protocols for audio, which is not
interoperable with the protocol called WiFi that is used for
transferring data packets on computer networks.

WiFi can be used for "live" audio data from analogue sources, but that
requires additional protocol support commonly used for internet radio
broadcasting, and the necessary software support (which can be messy).

Bluetooth has audio support and dongle transmitters are readily available.

For example.

Music Adapter Dongle with A2DP and aptX Low Latency Technology (BT-C1,

But the OP has a plex server. So this ain't really a necessity to get
music elsewhere...

Looks like a clone of a chromecast, i.e. it would let you stream over
WiFi from a phone/tablet/laptop to a 3.5mm jack suitable for line input
to an amplifier, not suitable for directly driving speakers ...

Ah well it certainly looks like it's going to be a bluetooth speaker then.

I wouldn't have thought that it was so difficult to find something that
would stream music over to wifi speakers.

If I could find an uprated version of what I have now that would do me.

You really *don't* mean WiFi speakers, you mean wireless speakers; maybe
you'd find something more relevant if you drop WiFi from your search terms?

I do, yes but if I use wireless I get results for Bluetooth as well, as
Bluetooth is also called wireless by many people.

What you have is propriety, unique to the manufacturer. It's not WiFi,
that's a universal protocol. No one is going to make a compatible
product, unless the thing becomes ubiquitous like Apple.

If the speakers are any good, bypass the wireless (is there an audio-in
socket?) and attach a chromecast audio.

Currently on sale, free post for £15.

I was just pointing out that a phono plug won't fit a headphone socket...

So you can have/have already got a DLNA capable server... I presume your
network already has WiFi, so a set of active speakers with a cheap
tablet would make quite a nice DLNA player that can stream straight from
the NAS.

There is a device by Kings Audio that is a bluetooth speaker which can also
play music from a ramstick. It is only a receiver, but a quick remember
seems to suggest they do also to a transmit dongle for using things the
other way around so to speak.

I'm using my old phone.
It streams quite well, however its much easier to use when I put the
music on an SD card and don't stream. You can get a lot of uncompressed
music on a 64G card.

It connects to the amp using bluetooth or HDMI or 3.5mm jack depending
on where I am at the time. I think the HDMI solution is best as it uses
the amps DAC and it sounds better than the phones DAC and it charges the
phone at the same time.

Still works fine with enough ram in the device that
is playing the audio and even with video too.

My next door neighbour is into internet radio but has
no net service at all. I put a wifi repeater half way down
her back yard and it plays the audio fine.

I used to play videos recorded on my PVR on the laptop
when bottling the bear, using wifi so there are no wires
involved, and that worked fine too.

Blue tooth is a packet radio system similar to WiFi but at a lower
power. The sound is sent as a digital stream.

Fair enough,
You could peruse these links . I havn't time or inclination to read
every one to see if they are RF/ WiFI/ Bluetooth but if nothing there
suits then you'll have to really DIY.

You can get phono to 3.5mm jack leads certainly... They are useful for
many things - but all typically dealing with line level signals, and
rarely much use for use with headphones, because you won't find many
headphone level outputs presented on phono sockets. (using a 3.5mm
headphone jack socket to feed something via phono however can be useful
on occasions where there are no better alternatives.
