My regular backup on Vista (SP2) started failing: "Access Denied" with code
0x80070005. Exasperatingly, there was nothing to tell me which file was the
culprit, and a scan (I used Treesize) to spot permissions anomalies found
nothing.

I traced the problem using the Event log. The system log had a "Warning"
(1116) that Microsoft Antimalware (Security Essentials) had found some
malware in a restore point, time: 21:48:35. The Application Event Log had
the entry (4104) indicating the backup had failed, time: 21:48:35.

I turned off System Restore (understanding that I'd be discarding Restore
Points and Shadow Copies), ran a full scan with Security Essentials, and
then turned on System Restore again. Next backup went through without
problems. (Your Mileage May Vary...).

I'm posting this for search engines, as I hadn't been able to find a clear
solution on the web, although many were posting the question. Hope this
helps.

I could not find anything in the system event log but in the application log I found an error code 2147942405 which when I googled it pointed me to an article that suggested it was a permissions issue in the System Volume Information file. It said to make the backup user have full control on a file in there. Instead I gave myself full control and only found one file in there, but now I am going to try the backup again to see if it works.

It seems that this is caused by the disk being encrypted, at least in my case. I was able to do a backup when I decrypted the target disk.
