What exactly does the latency percentile indicate?

Hello,
Here's what the Console documentation says about latency:
The latency graph shows the average duration for spans. The measured duration depends on selected span type. Default span type is message, which is the time measured from when the message was sent until the message processing has completed in the receiving actor

The percentile graph presents the latency spans in another way:
