Hotmail spam explosion

A very strange thing just happened to my hotmail account - a bogus transaction showed up supposedly from ebay... I didn't click on anything, but I checked my ebay account and no such transaction was listed....

Then it got weird... 

I now have over 300 (and rising) confirmation e-mails coming in from accounts being created by some sort of bot (it would appear).  

Is anybody familiar with this type of thing??
