Subject: New "Open Government" tab on City of Minneapolis web site

Colleagues:

As part of a broader refresh of our home page*, the City of Minneapolis recently added a new “Open Government” tab which provides shortcuts to a great variety of information from and about the City.    This tab gathers in one place links to both current and historical reports, data sets, public records, financial information, performance reports, Census data, City Council actions, maps and photographs that had been spread throughout the City’s website.   We hope this will provide more awareness of and easier access to these topics.

After clicking on the City’s home page, click the “Open Government” tab; see below for screenshot.

Please forward this note to others as appropriate; if you have comments or questions about any of the links, please let us know.

Website home page gets a facelift

The Communications and IT departments have refreshed the City’s public website home page design to provide a cleaner, more accessible format for presentation of information and user experience. The new home page launched this weekend.

Between March 2016 and January 2017, the City’s home page received more than 1.2 million page views. For comparison, the job openings page, which is the second most visited page, had nearly half a million views over the same period.

From a visual standpoint, the new design allows visitors to find information in a more intuitive format. The design includes better use of white space, design elements and information organization, all of which will provide a better user experience. This is important because the manner in which information is organized and presented contributes to the accessibility and usability of that information.

Nearly all information on the previous home page continues to exist in the new design. Some changes of note:

  • Placing “Current topics” in a central position so that enterprise-wide initiatives such as minimum wage, sick and safe time, the downtown office building and Super Bowl LII are prominent for website visitors to find.
  • Adding new header image at the top that will be refreshed periodically throughout the year to keep the site feeling fresh.
  • Adding the “Open government” tab, which is now next to the central tabs linking to “Current topics,” “Mayor’s Office” and “City Council.”
  • Expanding the footer to include the City’s accessibility block on every website page.

Given the growing visitor traffic to the City’s website, which will also see a rise as we inch closer to Super Bowl LII, the time was ripe to give this page a facelift, improving usability for our residents, businesses and visitors as a springboard into the broader website.
