Wondering how to fill the long evenings of the polar vortex of 2015?  Consider dipping into the largest ever release of federal data announced last week by Sunlight Foundation which had submitted a Freedom of Information Act request:

This is amazing. I don't see any links to the actual data; they may
have not released it yet.

Alan,

This journo describes how to get the information you seek at the
bottom of this article. I got this email because I'm part of this
awesome FOIA ListServ: http://www.nfoic.org/foi-listserv I seriously
recommend getting on there if you're interested in Freedom of
Information stuff going on in other states and at the federal level.

Cordially,
Kurtis

RELEASE OF ENTERPRISE DATA INVENTORIES COULD CHANGE THE FACE OF
JOURNALISM By Michael Ravnitzky , mik...@verizon.net

The Office of Management and Budget has announced that it plans to soon
provide to the Sunlight Foundation electronic copies of the Enterprise
Data Inventories for the 24 federal agencies that report the inventory
to OMB.

Here is one article describing the EDIs, which were created by the
President Obama¹s 2013 Open Data Executive Order.

http://fcw.com/articles/2015/02/09/omb-release-of-data.aspx

Each agency EDI identifies the title and attributes of hundreds or
thousands of datasets maintained by the agency. Want an example: here
is a .JSON type file with the EDI for the Department of Transportation.

http://www.dot.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/data.json

OMB will be providing the files in CSV or Excel form, making them
easier to read.

Access to the list of agency databases means that you will be able to
identify agency databases that could lead to hundreds of news stories,
and will allow you to more specifically seek data from the agency,
including data concerning the particular geographic areas covered by
your news organization.

You can get a digital copy of the 24 Enterprise Data Inventories with
the following letter:

======

OMB's FOIA Officer
Dionne Hardy
725 17th Street, NW, Room 9026
Washington, DC 20503
OMB...@omb.eop.gov
Fax: 202.395.3504

I respectfully request a digital/electronic copy of the agency
Enterprise Data Inventories from each of the agencies which have
submitted them to OMB. I prefer to receive the files in CSV or Excel
format.

This is a request that falls into the news media fee category.

I agree to pay up to $50 for applicable fees if necessary.

Sincerely,

======
