Tunnelblick Not Installing Correctly

Hello,

We have just updated to Yosemite and when we try to install Tunnelblick, current stable and beta releases, it fails no matter what the host. We have clean imaged these machines for our corporate environment and still does not work. It just gives the generic error to look at the console log. I have saved the console log errors. Anyone have an idea what might be going on? It seems to be a permissions issue at first glance.

Thanks for posting the logs. Somebody had a similar problem on Yosemite a few weeks or months ago, and the 3.6beta has more logging in an attempt to narrow down the problem but I never heard the final resolution.

In your logs, nothing unusual seems to be taking place other than the installer program being run repeatedly despite reporting a successful install and the resulting failure report to the user after four or five retries.

So an important question is whether the install actually succeeded – as the log message indicates – or failed, as evidenced by the fact that it was run again.

I suggest you try the following (using the beta because of its additional logging): Try to install Tunnelblick normally (by double-clicking on the Tunnelblick icon in a disk image). Then, assuming the install fails, go to /Applications and see if Tunnelblick is present. If so, double-click the Tunnelblick icon in /Applications and see if it runs, or if it says it needs to be secured.

• If it runs without being secured, then the install succeeded (even though it says it failed).
  
  
• If it says it needs to be secured, then please post the Console Log from that – it should indicate exactly why it needs to be secured, and that should be a clue about why the install failed.

The installer isn't verifying the ownership/permissions of the file after it installs the file (which is a bug) but I don't understand why it isn't being installed with the correct ownership/permissions in the first place. If I could see the ownership/permissions it has, that may give me an idea of why it isn't being installed with the correct ownership/permissions.

Please execute the following in Terminal on one of the affected machines:

ls -l /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

and post the results.

Thanks. That's the problem. The permissions should be 644, not 664. I will fix Tunnelblick so it forces the correct ownership/permissions of the file when you install Tunnelblick (it already makes sure the contents of the file are correct).

Before that fix is available, I think you might be able to fix it by executing the following in Terminal

sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

You'll be asked for your computer admin password when you do that; type it in and then press the "enter/return" key. Nothing will show up as you type, not even asterisk characters ("*").

It would be interesting to see if, having done that, a subsequent install of Tunnelblick makes the permissions bad.

I opened the installer from the disk image and installed it again. It seems the permissions did not change. So it installed successfully and ran just fine.

1. Which "new Tunnelblick" are you trying to install? (Tunnelblick 3.5.4 and 3.6beta10 are both "new".)

2. What version of Tunnelblick were you using before trying this installation? You can copy/paste the following into Terminal

defaults  read  net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick  tunnelblickVersionHistory

    to get a reverse-chronological-order list of versions of Tunnelblick that have been used.

You should be able to fix this by either

• Installing Tunnelblick 3.6beta10 (which has fixed this problem);
  
  or
  
  
• Copy/pasting the following command into Terminal:

sudo chown  0:0  /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

and then trying to install or launch Tunnelblick 3.5.4 again. You'll need to supply a computer admin username/password because of the "sudo".

Hi,
I have apparently the same problem as the two people that wrote in this thread and I tried both commands that you suggested (in the terminal) but I still don't seem to be able to install tunnelblick.
I am trying to install version 3.5.17 because I have mac OS 10.6.8.
I get the message "The installation, removal, recovery or repair of one or more Tunnelblick components failed. See the console log for details". The console log gives me this:

Hello,
Thank you for your answer. I removed Avast but I am still unable to install tunnelblick. (I am trying to install version 3.5.17 because I have mac OS 10.6.8.) 
I still get the following error message "The installation, removal, recovery or repair of one or more Tunnelblick components failed. See the console log for details". The console log is the following.

It looks like Tunnelblick is being installed except the permissions on one file are not correct.

First, enter the following command in Terminal (you can copy/paste it):

     sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

(Followed by the return/enter key).

Then try launching Tunnelblick normally (that is, the Tunnelblick program in /Applications, not the Tunnelblick installer).

Oh, sorry, I forgot: when sudo asks for your password, you'll need to enter your computer password (nothing will show as you type it, not even asterisks) and then press the enter/return key.

Please enter the following two commands in Terminal one at a time (you can copy/paste, but do it one line at a time):

   sudo chown 0:0 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

   sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

Followed by the return/enter key. After the first one, you'll have to enter your computer password (nothing will show as you type it, not even asterisks) and then press the enter/return key.)

Then try launching Tunnelblick by double-clicking /Applications/Tunnelblick. When you do, it should not ask for your password; it should  just start running.
