Trying to install Tunnelblick 3.2 beta34 on OS X 10.7.2.

This is the error I'm getting:

Installation or Repair Failed

The installation, removal, recovery, or repair of one or more Tunnelblick components failed. See the Console Log for details.

I had 3.2 beta30 working, but upon updating to 34 I get this error. I've tried completely removing Tunnelblick and going back to beta30, but I get the same error.

Sorry about your problem installing Tunnelblick.

Are you trying to install from a non-priviledged account? It should work, but I haven't tested it on Lion. (You'll need to give a computer administrator's username and password in any case.)

I would suggest (if you haven't done this already):

1. Drag /Applications/Tunnelblick.app to the Trash and empty the Trash
   
2. Download a fresh copy of Tunnelblick 3.2beta34 from http://code.google.com/p/tunnelblick/wiki/DownloadsEntry
   
3. Verify the SHA1 checksum by comparing the published SHA1 on the download page with the result from running the following command in Terminal:   "openssl sha1   ([path to the .dmg -- you can just drag the .dmg to the Terminal window]
4. Double-click the .dmg to open it
   
5. Double-click the Tunnelblick icon in the .dmg's window
   

None of this should affect your configurations, preferences, or settings.

For example, not booting from an internal drive, home folder not on boot drive, antivirus software present.

A private email exchange resolved this problem.

Tunnelblick was being installed after a special package (created by a prior system administrator) was used to install printer drivers.

Apparently that package interfered in some with the system's security settings, resulting in an inability to install Tunnelblick.

I was wondering whether you could tell me what you did to fix the problem? I'm also having the same error regarding repair/installation of Tunnelblick. I'm on Mac OS 10.6.8, installing Tunnelblick 3.2.3. I previously 3.2.1 and it was working fine with my HotSpotVPN account information but for some reason, when I tried to use it two days ago, I got an pop-up box that said i needed to changed ownership or permissions so I followed the directions and instead of working, Tunnelblick stalls, gives me a pop-up that says the repair/installation failed and closes. I have no access to log files or anything since it doesn't actually install. I tried deleting the old application and installing the latest 3.2.3 version with the exact same results. Rebooting multiple times didn't help and I'm not sure what the problem is.

If you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate them since the support team at HotSpotVPN doesn't seem to have any to offer...  Many thanks! The steps I took and the error messages I got are below...:

Upon double clicking to install (with files in my key folder selected), I get this message: 
Tunnelblick needs to: 
-Change ownership and permissions of the program to secure it 
-Repair the private configurations folder

Type your password to allow Tunnelblick to make changes

I then type my password and select open. It proceeds and the popup box that usually comes up when Tunnelblick is opening comes up saying "Securing Tunnelblick...." for a few minutes to try to open.

I then get this message in a second pop-up box in front of the already open one: 
Installation or Repair Failed 
The Installation, removal, recovery, or repair of one or more 

Tunnelblick components failed. See the Console Log for details.

I click "Ok" because that's all that is available and both pop-up boxes disappear. There is no Console Log, nor is there the dark icon in the top right hand corner for Tunnelblick.

Thanks for posting your Console log -- of course you are correct that there is no Tunnelblick log if Tunnelblick doesn't start!

The original poster's problem was solved by not installing the special "customized" printer drivers (which were out of date anyway), and just starting with a fresh OS X install.

But your problem is different. What is happening is shown by the following message

"Both /Users/Dede/Library/openvpn and /Users/Dede/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations exist and are folders"

I am not sure how this situation came about; but it probably has something to do with the installation of HotSpotVPN -- you may have been given instructions that were out-of-date, or perhaps the HotSpotVPN installer automatically does it.

Very old versions of Tunnelblick stored "private" configurations (those that only the currently logged in user -- "Dede" can use) in a non-standard folder, (~/Library/openvpn -- in your case, /Users/Dede/Library/openvpn). Newer versions store them in an OS X standard folder (~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations, in your case /Users/Dede/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations). To support old scripts and other programs that assume configurations are stored in the old location, when new versions of Tunnelblick start, they see the old folder and move it to the new location, then replace the old folder with an alias (link) to the new folder.

So you need to do the following:

1. Look at the two folders and make sure that the correct HotSpotVPN configuration files are in the /Users/Dede/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations folder. If they aren't, move them there by dragging/dropping.
2. Delete the (possibly now empty)  /Users/Dede/Library/openvpn folder by moving it to the Trash.
3. Launch Tunnelblick again. It will (without saying anything) create the link/alias at /Users/Dede/Library/openvpn pointing to /Users/Dede/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations.

I dont' remember if an HP printer was involved, but it wasn't a manufacturer-involved or Apple-involved update. It was a special installer package created by an earlier administrator at the organization that was having the problem. You might try emailing John Kitzmiller directly for more information.

What do you mean "our own version"? If you have changed the source code you may have broken something. If you haven't changed the source code, why are you using such an old version (3.3 is the current version.)

I have seen this when there is a bug in the installer (perhaps there is one in 3.2.6, I don't remember), and on an extremely slow machine that is doing a lot of other work simultaneously. The main program gives the installer a few seconds (five or ten) and "times out" on the assumption that the installer has crashed if the installer doesn't say it is finished in that time.

I had a similar problem upgrading to 3.3.0 (sorry, not sure what I upgraded from). 

My log files had lines such as the following (redacted):

Conversion of .ovpn and .conf configurations to .tblk configurations failed

The original configuration directory had several .crt files in it. 

Tunnelblick kept insisting it needed to copy these files from /etc/openvpn/vpn_name/name123.crt

However, the /etc/openvpn directory did not exist.

I switched to root user, created /etc/openvpn/vpn_name and copied all the files from the Configurations/vpn_name folder into that folder. 

Then the conversion ran successfully. 

I had several other VPNs defined which were not in .tblk format and they converted fine. 

Not sure what triggered this one. 

Wanted to document this issue here so you were aware of it -- as well that it might be a help for others who run into a conversion problem.

The problem was that the 19CaymanPing/caymans.conf file had a reference to /etc/openvpn/vpn_name/abc.crt and that file didn't exist.

So there is no way that Tunnelblick could convert that file.

Creating the missing files is one way to fix it -- if Tunnelblick sees the files, then it can convert the .conf file.

I guess the question I have is why was the conversion looking in that directory in the first place?
All the files it needed were in the other directory -- which had been previously loaded into Tunnelblick -- so it knew where to find them.

The conversion program was looking for the file in that place because the 19CaymanPing/caymans.conf file -- the OpenVPN configuration file -- told it to look in that place.

The .conf file had a line like

ca /etc/openvpn/vpn_name/abc.crt.

or

crt /etc/openvpn/vpn_name/abc.crt.

or similar.

The .conf file said that's where abc.crt was, so that's where Tunnelblick looked for it.

Hello, I also got the problem with installing Tunnelblick on Mac (OS X 10.7.5). 

I think it is caused by some printer error, as it was with the user above (I can't even open printers' preferences), but I don't know.

The fact that you can't run the  "Print & Scan" panel (or whatever it is called in your version of OS X) in system preferences means that your system has some serious problems. I'm not surprised that Tunnelblick won't install.

You should probably reinstall OS X.

Error was 'Operation not permitted'

indicates that the Tunnelblick installer was not able to create a file in the "/private/tmp" folder. This could indicate a problem with ownership and/or permissions for that folder -- that is, a problem with OS X. Or it could indicate some kind of "security" software running on your computer.

Assuming this is an ownership/permissions problem, this is the first time I've see it with the /private/tmp folder, but I have seen such problems with other system folders. Sometimes a poorly-written installer will modify the ownership and/or permissions of system folders (which it should not do). There is a description of this at System Folders Not Secure, but apparently Tunnelblick doesn't check the /private/tmp folder, so it doesn't display a clear message about the problem.

What version of OS X do you have?

Is there anything unusual about your system -- for example, do you have any "security" software installed, or have you done something to move your home folder?

It is strange that /private/tmp has the rootless attribute though. Should I try to remove that instead?

(Ali and I have been corresponding privately, off-list, to try to resolve his problem.)

System Integrity Protection -- that makes sense. I had forgotten about it. I know Ali has some unknown "extended attribute" on /private/tmp, but haven't heard back about what it is.

As far as I know, private/tmp should not have the "rootless" attribute. It isn't on /private/tmp on my "pristine" copy of 10.11.6 (it has only the OS on it and I only apply OS updates), and it isn't there on my working 10.11.6 system either, which has all sorts of stuff installed.

I think the "rootless" attribute is what makes SIP protect the folder.

I think some badly coded installer or program has added the "rootless" extended attribute to that folder, in both Ali's system and yours. It would be interesting to know what programs you have in common.

My understanding is that you can add "rootless" attribute to a folder but can't remove it, but I'm not sure -- maybe you have to turn off SIP globally so you can remove it from a single folder. If you can, remove "rootless" from the folder and then turn SIP back on, so it is protecting all of the rest of the system.

I was not able to find a way to remove the rootless attribute. xattr -d is suppose to do it, but I SIP doesn't let me do it in the regular system and I cannot find this utility in Recovery Mode. So for now I'll have to live without SIP.
