Folks,

Tunnelblick works great for my VPN needs. But, I have a scheduled shutdown each night and if Tunnelblick is open in the menubar, not connected, the Mac will not shutdown. I watched as the time arrived and the screen briefly goes dark and then I am back to the Finder. If I quit Tunnelblick before the shutdown time arrives, all works as expected. I can also manually shutdown with no issues. Does anyone have any ideas?

I will look into it and post back in this thread.

It would be helpful to know what version of MacOS you are using.

I am using El Capitan 10.11.6 on a Macbook Air (13-inch, Early 2014) if that matters. Using the latest version of Tunnelblick, 3.7.2 (build 4850)

I haven't been able to reproduce this. If you're willing to try to help find the problem:

1. Copy/paste the following into /Applications/Utilities/Terminal to enable additional logging of Tunnelblick's shutdown process:

defaults write net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick DB-SD -bool yes

After going through the scheduled shutdown process which fails, examine the Console Log and copy/paste the log into a reply

You can disable the extra logging by copy/pasting the following:
defaults delete net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick DB-SD

2. With Tunnelblick launched (in the menu bar) but not connected to a VPN, does a manual shutdown (Apple : ShutDown… followed by clicking the "Shut Down" button) work?

3. Approximately how many different VPN configurations do you have?

1. I will run the Terminal command and check the Console after tonight's shutdown.

2. I am able to manually shutdown when Tunnelblick is in the menubar with no active VPN connection. With a connection, I just see alert windows to confirm, which isn't a problem.

3. I have 16 possible VPN connections listen in the menubar drop-down. I only regularly use about three.

I have logging enabled and over the past two days the computer has shutdown successfully or remained running. I am trying to replicate the conditions that generate the behaviour.

It did not shutdown last night. This morning I reset the auto-shutdown time to several minutes in the future. I put the computer to Sleep. After about 15 minutes, I checked and it was still running. I don't see anything obvious in the Console log, filtered for 'tunnelblick'. On the second run this morning, I preceded it with a VPN connection and disconnection:

Here's hoping you can shed some light.

P.S. I will logout of my regular account and try a scheduled shutdown in my clean admin account.

Folks,

I found that the conflict is with Bartender, a utility that corrals user-selected menubar items into a submenu. I noticed its helper appearing in a line in the Console log filtered for 'tunnelblick'. So, I quit the utility and ran another test auto-shutdown session. The Mac shut down successfully.

Earlier, I ran a session in my clean admin account and had successful auto-shutdown. This indicated that it was something in my regular account, leading me to discover the Bartender conflict. Here is the utility's web site: https://www.macbartender.com

It is a handy utility. I am open to suggestions.

Cheers,

Paul

By the way, I saw that the VyprVPN client was running successfully, loading at startup, in my clean admin account. I found I needed to use the Tunnelblick client as an alternative in my regular account. (I found that it would connect successfully, as shown in the client, but I could not get any site's web page to load.)
