Icon placement problems when Bartender is NOT installed

This thread is for discussing problems with placement of the Tunnelblick icon when NOT using Bartender.

Everyone with icon problems should be using Tunnelblick 3.6beta10 or later – that is the only version that is being debugged for these problems. If you need to use some other version to use your VPN, that's fine, but you should report problems that occur when using 3.6beta10.

Note: The option to place the Tunnelblick near the Spotlight icon may be disabled, depending on the version of OS X, the number of screens, and the "Displays have different spaces" checkbox. (And maybe some other things I forget.) The option is disabled because there is a bug in OS X which makes that feature not work under certain circumstances.

If you have problems, please report back, in as much detail as possible, what the problem is. Also please include the following:

• Confirm that you are using Tunnelblick 3.6beta10
• Confirm that you are not using Bartender (there is a separate thread to discuss that)
• Your version of OS X
• The number of screens that are being used
  
• Whether a laptop is being used in "clamshell" mode
• The state of the "Place next to Spotlight" checkbox
  
• The state of the "Displays have different Spaces" checkbox in the Mission Control System Preferences
  
• What (if anything) you have tried changing, and whether or not that affects the problem.
• Anything else you think might be helpful
