Hello, All -

We are pleased to send you this Special Meeting Reminder about this
month's (October) Meeting, which will be held TODAY, Thursday,
10/20/2016 , at the Red Bank Public Library (rather than at our
regular meeting place on the grounds of Pilgrim Baptist Church)...

It is with great pleasure that we make an Additional Special
Announcement , this time regarding yet another special guest who will
be joining us on Thursday evening: Mrs. Iman AQuddus , who works at
the NJ Department of Education, and serves on the NJ Amistad
Commission; as such, we look forward to Mrs. AQuddus discussing with
us, and providing us vital information about, the implementation (and
success) of the Amistad Law in our children's classrooms.

The Amistad Law, passed in 2002, requires all schools in New Jersey to
teach African American History by incorporating it into their social
studies curricula.

This legislation also created The Amistad Commission , a 23-member
body charged with ensuring that African-American history,
contributions and experiences are adequately taught in the state's
classrooms.

Our inquiry is: How regularly are our schools complying with this law?

D) Special Guest : Mr. Tom Little - Legislative Director to NJ
Assembly members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey

Mr. Tom Little serves as Legislative Director to Assembly members Eric
Houghtaling and Joann Downey of New Jersey's 11th Legislative
District, which includes Asbury Park, Freehold and other
municipalities of Monmouth County.

Mr. Little is very interested in the mission of Citizens for a Diverse
and Open Society's , and has been supportive of us in our goals, and
in researching and acquiring information about the Amistad Law

Your Active Presence is Needed, and Requested: Please Attend and Participate...

Please make an effort to be there, to show your support, and to be
involved. Ask Questions: If you have any questions that pertain to
this law, its implementation, and/or the teaching of African-American
History, please write it/them down so you can and do participate in
this important dialogue.

Our future also depends on what our students learn about and from the past...
