Transgender students file injunction demanding Pine-Richland halt 'discriminatory' policy

A legal group representing three transgender students today filed notice that it is seeking a preliminary injunction demanding that the Pine-Richland School District halt a “discriminatory” policy that forces students to use school bathrooms in accordance with the gender they were assigned at birth.
The Lambda Legal Group entered the injunction in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania on behalf of high school seniors Juliet Evancho, Elissa Ridenour, both 18, and another senior only identified as A.S. because he is a minor.
The students sued the district Oct. 6, about three weeks after the school board passed a resolution, known as Resolution 2, reversing a longstanding policy that had allowed students to use restrooms in accordance with their gender identities.
The preliminary injunction seeks to stop school district officials “from enforcing Resolution 2 or any policy, practice or custom of the Pine-Richland School District and/or Pine-Richland High School that denies [the students] the access and use of the restrooms and other sex-designated facilities that match their gender identity; taking any formal or informal disciplinary action against [the students] for using the restrooms and other sex-designated facilities consistent with their gender identities; and refusing to treat [the students] consistent with their gender identity in any respect.”
