Transgender Reporter: Bruce Jenner’s ‘Still Trying to Cling Onto That Maleness’
by Josh Feldman | 3:04 pm, April 25th, 2015
Zoey Tur, the first transgender national television reporter, told Michael Smerconish on CNN this morning that she wasn’t completely impressed with Bruce Jenner‘s
big ABC News interview
because of how “uncomfortable” Jenner is in talking about undergoing a
gender transition, and how the whole thing ended up being the starting
point for another reality show.
Before the special aired, Tur wrote
an op-ed for The Washington Post
saying right in the headline that Jenner is “the worst possible choice”
for a trans icon. Tur worried about trans progress being “swept up with
the ultimate symbol of abnormality and dysfunction: the Kardashian
family.”
Tur told Smerconish that she liked parts of the interview and was even moved to tears, but Jenner “was evading the rest of the questions” and was very cagey about certain issues, especially on the subject of sexuality.
Smerconish asked if Jenner was being “dishonest” about anything or holding back. Tur said Jenner’s “trying to cling onto that maleness, that macho behavior,” which isn’t really consistent with the transition process. Based on how Jenner acted during the interview, Tur assessed a great discomfort from Jenner regarding the entire thing.
She advised Jenner to cut ties with the Kardashians, “be comfortable in your own skin,” and “stop hyping another show.”
