I got this press release from Toronto Hydro today. The event may be of interest to some people. 'Peak shaving' is definitely an approach that has promise for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing a more flexible electricity grid that works better with renewable sources of energy.

Toronto Hydro Invites Children to Lead the Charge on Conserving Energy This Summer

On Tuesday, July 10, Toronto Hydro, in conjunction with community conservation educators EcoSpark, would like to invite you to a demonstration of energy conservation in the home using Toronto Hydro’s new peaksaver® PLUS program.

It’s so easy, kids can lead the charge. EcoSpark will prove it by leading a group of kids through simple energy-conservation exercises in a downtown Toronto home. A Toronto Hydro representative will also be available to speak with media.

peaksaver® PLUS is a new, free program designed to reduce the strain on the city’s electrical grid. The initiative builds on the success of the existing peaksaver program, which involves the installation of a switch in a residence or an industrial building to slow down the fan cycle of central air conditioners, and power down electric water heaters and pool pumps during peak load times. peaksaver® PLUS offers the same service, but also includes a free in-home Energy Display device to help customers monitor their electricity usage.

Details are as follows:

Date
Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Time
11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Location
395 Balliol Street
Toronto, ON  M4S 1E1
(Davisville Ave. and Mount Pleasant Rd.)

*If you're unable to take public transit, taxi chits are available to facilitate your commute.

We hope to see you there!

This upcoming film screening may be of interest:

THE AGE OF STUPID

The Age of Stupid is a 90-minute film about climate change, set in the future.

Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off)

stars as a man living alone in the devasted world of 2055, looking back at

footage from 2007 and asking:

why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?
