Specifying alternate dependency locations

If one installs external dependencies (say libpng) in non-standard locations what is the best way to specify these to luarocks?

For example, if I install libpng in /n/app/libpng , how could I then tell luarocks such that:

luarocks install image

would find the PNG library and thus include PNG support for image?
