error calling cuda on Mac 10.11.6 with cuda 8

I was trying to install Torch 7 on my 2013 MacBook Pro running OS 10.11.6, following the instructions on torch.ch.

I successfully installed everything without error, but when I launched an interactive session and tried to execute

a = a:cuda()

I got the following error message:

I tried removing torch and reinstalling everything from scratch even reinstalling CUDA 8 to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?
