Oates has a recent collection entitled Wild Nights: Stories About the Last Days of Poe, Dickinson, Twain, James and Hemingway that might work well. Great stories, interesting subjects, and she deploys a number of different voices. If one story went well, you could keep going. I found it fun to research the "true stories" behind each. The James story is both appalling and heart-breaking (and realistic) and the Dickinson is inspired sci-fi.
