It's fantastic she's at UC Berkeley, which is a dynamic and exciting place to live and work. This is the place where inventiveness, whether in the Sciences or the Arts,  and thinking "outside the box" has translates into social change over the generations.  She will fit in perfectly.  JCO wrote a short story in the New Yorker magazine in July 2013 called "Mastiff" that takes place in the Berkeley/Oakland hills. The two characters in this story -- man and woman on a hike and come upon another hiker with a Mastiff -- are quintessential flawed JCO characters, what sets this story apart is the fresh and different surroundings, and a welcome departure from stories set in the East.
