Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on the 1st phase of the open
textbook project.
Phase 1 was to recruit faculty from the BC system to review 10 existing
open textbooks from the commons, including the OpenStax Physics,
Sociology and Biology texts.
Originally, our hope was that we could find 20
faculty from the BC post-sec system to write reviews (2 per textbook).
When the RFP closed last week
, we had over 60 faculty applications
representing 20 institutions to review the 10 textbooks - an excellent
response from our provincial post-sec system.
After some
internal discussions, we have decided rather than limit the reviews to
the original 20, we will expand the review process and accept reviews
from all the faculty who have applied to participate. We are also in the
process of finding additional textbooks to our original 10 for areas
where we had an exceptional response (Statistics, Chemistry and
Psychology).
We are now coordinating the review process with the faculty who are taking part. All the reviews are due by September 3 and will be publicly posted alongside of the
textbook on
open.bccampus.ca. Each review will be released under a CC license that allows
others to reuse our faculty reviews on their sites.
Cheers,
Clint
