OK, I'm just looking for a bit clarification around Office 2016 for Mac activation..

In the past you didnt even need a product code for Office for Mac..

But now you have to have a Microsoft account to activate it?  Office 365 account?  I have an account I use for VLSC and another for Office365.  Neither will activate Office 2016.

We're an Apple and Google place mostly, with some Windows, but does this mean that for staff to use Office 2016 for Mac I have to set them all up with Office 365 accounts?

ugh,
Craig

No.
When you download the iso from VLSC, there are 2 .pkg files - one is an installer and the other applies the volume license -  you need to run both.

Which then begs the question "Why couldn't there just be one volume-license PKG file for all schools in NZ and it be applied to the standard TELA image?".

I guess the answer lies somewhere deep within the licensing fine print...

:(

If one version, would it be office 2013, office2016 or office Pro Plus?

In the latter case there have already been multiple updates.

This is possibly a reason why there is not a pre-installed image.

But according to TELA, coming with OSX High Sierra there will be no imaging / preinstalled apps anyway..

We use Office 2016 as Pete said with the volume licence installer.
Note that users (after a new install on a Mac) are given the the option of signing in to Office when they first start each programme
but at the bottom (very small...)  is a 'skip sign in link' - so they do not need an account.

You can set copy some default preference files to ~/Library/Preferences and /Library/Preferences so that the users don’t see that prompt, this can be done via a package installer or just script it as part of your installation.  New users will pickup them up from the System preferences automatically on creation.
