Hey techie group
Our School is looking at installing a few CCTV cameras as have had a few issues out of hours that we would like recorded.  We are looking at systems that run over IP & would VLAN.
Looking for some advice & contacts - would love your feedback.
Mid techie, not at the level to put my own system together, looking at bringing an outside firm to work with.  Cost always a factor :(
Let me know your thoughts, disasters, great moments.

Hi Raewyn,

Try Rob Riches at http://www.cctvnz.co.nz/ or 0800 CCTVNZ.

Another option would be to contact VST - http://www.vst.co.nz/synology/ - they are distributors for Synology NAS, which has an excellent security camera system built in. They may be able to put you in touch with some installers?

Good luck... it's sad that vandalism and theft is on the rise and that schools are becoming more and more of a target :-/

Cheers!
Andy

Thanks for the helpful info Andy.  And yes, very sad that schools are the target.  We have replaced our outside speakers 4 times in the last 3 years, each time with a promise from the company installing that they would never be stolen.  Also now having issues with graffiti around the school - only takes a couple of undesirables to ruin life for everyone.

Last year one of the schools I am involved with had two security cameras stolen!

The perps snuck up to them from the side and behind, then climbed up to cut the cables and eventually tear the devices from their mounts. I don't know if they thought the cameras hold the recordings and therefore they were taking the evidence, but of course that's not the case. And these cameras also capture audio...

When a group of teachers listened to the audio and heard one of the perps laugh with a particularly unique style of laugh, two of them simultaneously blurted out the same student's name!

The rest is history...

Pete

We had a quote from a company here in Auckland that suggested 4 high end German cameras and cloud recording and that was going to cost $10,000... They said they could do cheaper, less robust, less capable Chinese made cameras for about half the price but said they have had some issues with them in terms of reliability. We've had dummy cameras stolen and I still have doubts as to the cost benefit of cameras (a hoodie defeats pretty much all chances of getting an ID on someone) - however our BOT are keen to put a system in place at some point.

The audio recording was very useful in this case, but also illegal.
I hope that the school was warned against covertly recording private conversations in the future.

We have 20 off UniFi-Video cameras here - just upgrading some from G2 to G3 at the moment. They work great.
Yes - you do have to disable the microphone on them (which is possible). The Cameras can have audio re-enabled but only with a factory reset.

We have had a few of the G2 and G1 series vandalised. Funnily they were all caught doing it - even as blatant as staring right down the lens the muppets.
You can buy the Ubiquiti NVR or just install Debian on a server (VM environment fine) and run it from there too. Does take some linux knowhow for the self-install option however.

I am not sure about illegal? Normally if there is an expectation of privacy (like a bathroom) then it could be considered illegal but if you put a sign up stating there is cctv and it is a public place (like a school) then there should be no reason why a conversation in front of a security camera should be expected to be private.

When you record audio and video it changes from CCTV/surveillance to a completely different category and can be seen as a breach of privacy under the Privacy Act 1993 (and/or Section 216 of the Crimes Act 1962) if someones speech is being recorded without their knowledge.

If you want to know more about recording audio without another persons knowledge, have a yarn to Todd Barclay 😂

I think it's in the Privacy Act. No audio.  It's like a phone conversation being recorded.  Ok if one end knows it's being recorded.
