Hi all,

Just a drop in regarding long term storage of school photos, school events etc. Host providers etc?

Some schools using Flickr?
I am thinking both un-shared storage, probably with some sort of paid subscription that guarantees data retention & backup, and maybe a public/private access (not sure if for current staff/student only or Alumni)

We do use issuu for magazine content, YouTube for video etc.

I purged a few years off onto DVD (actually got a student to do it) that allowed me to recover a few hundred gig of NAS space. Haven't had anyone in the last year come ask for anything.

Our major concern with DVDs is degradation over time of the media, which apparently can be depressingly quick and makes them no good for long term archives.
Though I confess this was a few years back, it's possible they've improved since.

Feels like the key is having a system that doesn't require regular checking for corruption (or format-obsolescence) which typically local copies need.

Hi,

Not to sound ignorant, but what's wrong with Google Team Drive?

Depends on your belief in corporations and available space. Embarking on a retrospective storage of photographic images can lead to a large amount of space being required for places that have been in operation for a while.

Plus, when originally discussed (in places I've had the discussion) Google Team Drive didn't exist :)

Hi,

I figured it'd not been mentioned in the past because it's new, but had wondered why it hadn't been mentioned as an option yet here. I can understand if someone is worried about security/physical location of storage etc, just thought I'd throw it in as a contender!

Good Drive itself would have worked still, perhaps with an account un-tied to a member of staff to ensure longevity.

Google Photos has unlimited storage within certain size limits.

Seemingly 16Mpx (or 1080p for video) for those playing at home.

Google Team Drive not an option (at the moment) being O365 orientated - but then a Sharepoint Library is.
Certainly for storage and permissions its the easiest option.

Anyone using anything outside the Google / Microsoft platform?
I'm thinking school direction changes - but perhaps just go with now and shift things later if things change?

Google states that Google Photo should not be enabled if you can not bind your users to the Terms and Conditions. I do not believe we can legally bind our users therefore have not enabled. How are you people approaching this?

We used to use picasaweb galleries, then when that was retired we tried google photos but there were issues with the sharing. We have now opted for smugmug which is the service of choice in the professional photographer community and I've been impressed with it. Prices range from $4 - $25 a month though most schools won't need more than the power plan for $6/month. There are tools that will transfer photos from existing services like google / flickr if you move - it worked quite well and only took a couple of hours to bring in all our photos - 17,000 pix in 100s of albums.
Example of how we have set this up here: https://kowhai.smugmug.com/

We've recently set up, for two different schools a Digital Ocean Service with Block Storage + Backups.
One service has around 100GB on there, and costs arounD $120 UDS / year.
The second is using about 18GB and costs about $65 UDS/year.

Our time was about an hour and we provided sFTP access to upload the data (the larger school is using Rsync to incrementally push data up )

The benefit of this is, these are web servers and we're built a gallery type script that they can drop in a directory of photos and it creates a gallery on the fly of all images in that directory.

It's a good/offsite backup for anything really.

I also recommend Smugmug, we signed up for this in Jan and I have also just signed up for it at home. It has a nice feature which allows you to password protect your albums to keep unwanted people out.
