KUALA LUMPUR: The local Internet scene just got a bit more interesting with US portal Yahoo! officially launching its Malaysian site (www.yahoo.com.my), just two months after online auction-house eBay Inc set up shop here as well.
Yahoo!, which claims to be the most popular online destination with 345 million unique users across 26 properties, said the local site would provide Malaysian surfers with a comprehensive suite of entertainment and communication products and services.
Malaysia has approximately 10 million Internet users who are spending an increasing amount of time online, Yahoo! said in a statement.
About 50% had access to the Net at home, while 45% had access at their workplace, according to surveys conducted last year by Synovate, a global market research firm.
"Malaysia presents good opportunities for us to grow our business as its online audience accounts for over 40% of the population and is still growing," said Reza Behnam, managing director of Yahoo! Singapore and Southeast Asia (http://asia.yahoo.com).
"Yahoo! plans to tap this growing audience base to offer relevant services, thereby extending our reach and deepening our engagement with Malaysian Net users," he added.
The Yahoo! Malaysia site is also the first in Asia to feature the new look launched in the United States (www.yahoo.com) last September.
The new look has a more streamlined design, more relevant navigation, more updated and fresher content, and better search functionality, the company claimed.
Next to Malaysian and international news, Yahoo! Malaysia offers services like Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging, of which a new version was launched last November.
Yahoo! Messenger was the first major instant messaging service to provide Avatars, Audibles and the ability to share search results amongst friends through the integration of Yahoo! Search in the Messenger Window.
To stay connected anywhere and anytime, users can also use Messenger for SMS (short message service) to send mobile text messages to friends and family even when away from their PCs, simply by using their Yahoo! ID.
Yahoo! also offers 250MB of storage for its Yahoo! Mail service, which it claimed was more than any other webmail provider in Malaysia.
"Each month, we see millions of visitors to our site using a variety of services to communicate, seek information, transact and interact with other users.
"With the all-new Yahoo! Malaysia site, Malaysians will be able to conveniently access an extended suite of localised services tailored to their needs," Behnam said.
In conjunction with the launch, Yahoo! is introducing a Y! 10 Search contest (http://yahoo.com.my/10search) starting Feb 7.
Each week, contest participants will have to predict the top 10 search words based on a particular theme set by Yahoo!.
Contestants stand a chance to win a trip to Pangkor Laut Resort with 10 friends and take home 10 Yahoo! mementos.
