Hello! My name is Jason, and I'm (sometimes) a UI developer and a creative technology consultant currently based in Omaha, NE. In my personal time I'm mostly focused on digital fabrication, generative art, and custom electronics, usually in close collaboration with creative professionals. If you're interested in what that might look like you can check out the type of weird stuff I get up to over at http://jason-webb.info, and my various online presences, all accessible via icon links at the top of my site.

On Friday I applied for and got called in for a job interview here in Minneapolis for Monday (today), and I'm looking to get a basic feel of the maker culture and resources of the area before I have to go home tomorrow. The job looks OK, but I'm really looking for a city with a wacky, active maker/hacker scene and, equally important, some good equipment to bring my personal interests and work to a new level.

I arrived late last night and am heading out tomorrow at around 4 or 5PM - would anyone be up for giving me a quick glimpse of the space sometime tomorrow (Tuesday the 14th) between say 9:30am and 4pm?

Its super short notice, I know, but I figured I might as well ask and see what happens just in case :)

Hi, Jason.

I'd be happy to give you a tour.  I can be at the Hack Factory (Twin Cities Maker) about 10:00am tomorrow (Tuesday).

Let me know if that works.

I'm glad someone could get down there and show you around.  Good luck on the Job Hunting, if it all pans out here in Minneapolis, hopefully we will see you around the shop.

Two things:

First, thank you so much George for giving me a tour of the space and for the awesome conversation! I've visited my fair share of hackerspaces around the country, and its rare to have such fantastic, honest insight into the community and culture. You guys really have a great ambassador in George - I would absolutely want to be a part of the TC Maker community after chatting with him!

Secondly, I accepted an offer from the company I interviewed with just yesterday, which means I will moving to Minneapolis and joining you all very soon! My first day is the 27th, which means I'll probably be becoming a member in March sometime once I settle in a bit. As nice as it is to have a job, at the end of the day work is work, and my decision to move to Minneapolis really depended heavily on seeing the maturity and "flavor" of communities like TC Maker in the area. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and finding ways to integrate into and contribute to the community!

If any of you are up for sharing your perspective on neighborhoods for apartment hunting, or other cool groups of creative weirdos to connect with, please feel free to send me a private message any time! I literally know nothing of Minneapolis (never even thought about it until last Thursday when I applied!), so I'm in total information-sponge mode :)
