Posting a sticky to pool efforts on this.

Thanks for the logs so far.

The best log I have received shows that the action executes OK
(acknowledged by Android), Android changes all the audio settings to
silent mode but then either Android or another app immediately reverts
the device to normal ringer mode with no indication why (some people
see the icon flash briefly in the status bar, that's why).

Do affected people have Beautiful Widgets installed ? Other apps that
might manage Silent Mode ?

Could you try in your profiles first a Task / Wait action of a second
or two before the Silent Mode action ?

If the screen is already on when the profile triggers does that make
any difference ?

I do indeed.

I don't have beautiful widgets if that is thought a possible problem.

Also, I'm NOT rooted. All the other comments I read were from people
who were rooted. A root requiring app causing the problem??

Beautiful Widgets is installed (only using the weather widget though), no others I could think off.

Screen on/off doesn't matter for me.

A second wait before silent mode seems to make it stick.

Thanks for looking into this.

I have a Verizon GS3 and Tasker sets silent mode (vibrate) with no problem.

I ran it with the 2 second wait and it still didn't stick. The silent icon appeared for a second and then went away. Screen on or off doesn't seem to matter. I do have beautiful widgets installed.

Rooted ? What's the trigger for your profile ?

Yes, rooted, stock ROM. It fails for both calendar entry and time contexts.

I've been playing with the wait: one second is hit or miss, I now use 3 seconds and it appears to stick.

I have Beautiful Widgets installed, with a 4x1 SuperClock widget with Weather updating hourly.

Profile components include (in order): Location (Distance), Calendar (Weekdays), and Time (08:00 - 17:00)
Task components include (in order) : Set Bluetooth Off, Silent Mode Vibrate, Set WiFi Off.

When I arrive within the location parameters, I generally need to turn the screen on (sometimes unlock) and the tasks run, and the phone goes into Vibrate mode. Upon the end of the time settings, my phone goes back into the Sound On profile.

If there is anything you would like me to provide, please let me know.

Thanks.

After watching my silent profiles for a few days I've come to the conclusion that waits don't reliably make this work :(

I apologize if this is a stupid question or has been asked before, but is you're "silence" profile remaining active? If not, that would explain it. I use a similar profile every day when I am at work. When I connect to my work WiFi, it turns on silent (vibrate) mode. As long as my "AtWork" profile remains active, it works just fine on my Verizon SGS3.

No, the profile stays active. BTW, I have a T-Mobile SGS3, maybe the problem is carrier specific?

My co-worker and his wife both have T-Mobile SGS3s but they don't have Tasker. Is there anything I can have him try outside of Tasker? I could create a child app and ask him to install and try it (unfortunately I don't know if he's be agreeable to that), but I'm not sure that would prove anything.

You could give them the trial tasker that's valid for 7 days to try out, if they are willing. I just don't think you can import profiles with the trial version.

I tried creating a child app that simply turns on silent mode when it connects to our work WiFi. It did not work on my co-workers T-Mobile SGS3. I have only done a couple of child apps with mixed results so I could just be doing something wrong.

Pent: I have a SGS3 and silent mode works. In fact, I have Tasker shut down my phone's audio settings (except the ringer) at night. I've used the phone's controls to go into silent mode, and it works without a problem.

My SGS3 is on Verizon and the silence mode just simply doesn't work...with or without the delay.  It will work if I run it manually, but not if I expect it to run automatically.

It suggests there's something about the conditions when you run it
that causes the problem. What are those ?

I have SGS3 9100 and silent mode works only from manually running tasks, task based on time change silent mode on and immediately off with vibration sound. Nothing helps. Sometimes works but after Tasker service off and on again stopped working.
Two days ago I found that return from night to day profile doesn't work too, sometimes.

Hi Pent,

Thought I would add to this. I have an HTC Sensation not rooted and suffer this problem too. I have two profiles, one that sets silent mode based on a time context between 2300 and 0600. This fails. However, interestingly enough, the exit task which sets the volumes back to high does work. Like the others, I have a Tasker widget that runs the silent task and this works fine. Also if I run the task from within Tasker, it runs fine.

I have another profile that uses both time and a calendar context which runs a task setting to vibrate (not silent). This works fine. However, if I set the vibrate task to silent it fails. So it would seem that it is only the set Silent On that causes the issue.

I'll test the time only context profile to use vibrate and not silent and see if that works or not. I suspect it will work ok.

The conditions are Monday through Friday, 8am-3pm. At 8am the phone switches to vibrate then quickly switches back to normal sound setting.

I found workaround. Make silent mode = on two times, with two seconds wait between calls. Works for me fine.

Rooted Verizon Galaxy S3
4.0.4
no Beautiful Widgets
no custom ROM
no other apps managing sounds

No problems with Silent Mode with time contexts. Ex. my night time sleep mode

Calendar based profiles for mute or vibrate activates on time but turns off 5 - 30 minutes later.

Could you enable Menu / More / Run Log and when the profile
deactivates check in the Run Log if Tasker is doing it ?

My workaround stopped working. I've been changed it. Second change of Silent mode= on has added if condition-only if variable silent is not on.
Now it works, but who knows.
I'm discover that two days ago each change of Silent mode=on has as a result FC of application Music Hub.

I've encountered this one also, and do have Beautiful Widgets installed, although use nothing that would play with the sound settings.
Running the latest CM10 nightly, though this has been present for a while.

Specifically this occurs when the headset is connected - Pressing Play/Pause on the wired headset takes the volume off silent, regardless of whether the button press is Playing or Pausing.
Workaround atm is to have Tasker monitor for %MTRACK being set and then reapply Silent mode. This seems to stick.

At night I put my phone in silent mode manually. I use tasker to turn silent mode off if a specific contact calls. The trigger is "incoming call" and then the contact name. The action is simply silent mode = off. This worked flawlessly on my old Droid X (running gingerbread, rooted).

I recently upgraded to a GS3 (jelly bean, rooted), and this no longer works. When I get an incoming call from a specified contact, the phone will simply vibrate once, and that's it. The icon in the notification bar shows that tasker IS turning silent mode off, but no matter what I try it still won't ring.

This is an issue that plagues all SGS 3 apparently. Look at this thread for workarounds: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/tasker/0XgGaEhMGt4/discussion

I have attached the profiles that work for me with sleep mode on my GS3 - SGH-i747 on AT$T, currently my phone is rooted stock UCLH9.

The steps that happen in this profile are: Entering Sleep Mode on Power AC & from 22:30 to 07:00
  1. Silent Mode On
  2. Variable Set %SLEEPMODE to 1
  3. Run App Screen Filter, set to 40%
Ending Sleep Mode:
  1. Wait 15 seconds
  2. Silent Mode Off
  3. Variable Clear %SLEEPMODE
  4. Screen Filter set to 100% (off)

On my SGS3 running stock XXDLJ4 the %SILENT variable no longer works. Profiles that test for is set/isn't set now fail to to anything.

Until a fix is found I am testing for Airplane Mode instead as this works for my requirements.

I prefer to set Silent Mode though..

John.

I believe silent mode (%SILENT) will always be set. It is set to "on", "off", or "vibrate", so you should match to those values.

Here's a possible workaround. Instead of using the Silent Mode action,
set a variable to the silent value you want e.g.

Variable Set, %WantedSilent, on

Then create a new profile:

State: Variable Value, %WantedSilent Not Matches %SILENT
Task:
Wait 3 Seconds
If %WantedSilent Matches on
Silent Mode, on
Else If %WantedSilent Matches vibrate
Silent Mode, vibrate
Else
Silent Mode, off

i.e. keep trying until it sticks. If it drops out in an hour, do it
again. However, if it never sticks you might get in a loop...

I have my GS3 go into silent mode "vibrate" when near a specified wifi network (at work).  Exit task is set to turn silent mode off.  Works perfectly every time.  Does not matter if the screen is on or off.

Do you connect to that network, or just when your wifi sees it? (my office doesn't have wifi, but offices near mine do)

Thanks!

no, I don't connect to it, the profile activates just when it sees it.  The exit task seems to take a little while, I'm not certain if it only checks periodically or if it needs to see a new set of networks in range and that the one specified is not part of the new group.
