Hi Gang,

I'm very new to Tasker and learning a lot.  I've made some great progress and I know I'll be using this app for years to come.

My issue is this.  In doing the Step Through 3: Menu Task from the Tasker Wiki, I've created a scene with a menu, as instructed.  It works on my Galaxy S5 running Tasker 5.1m but when I do the same exersize on my Galaxy Tab A running Tasker 4.9u4m, the Menu does not show in the Scene.  (I am using 4.9u4 so I can create Kids to use on my Android Car Head Unit running Android 4.4.2).

Here's the Scene:

Scene: Step Test 1

                P:-1x-1  L:1248x780

Element: Menu1/Menu

                Geometry:

                                P:238,125 798x532 L:618,391 1x1

                Content:

                                Source: Manual

                                Variable:

                                Selection Mode: Single

                                Item Layout: Builtin Item Layout

                                Horizontal Space: 1

                                Vertical Space: 1

                Items:

                                1. Label: Calculator Action: Launch App [ App:Calculator Data: Exclude From Recent Apps: Always Start New Copy: ]

                                2. Label: Beep Action: Beep [ Frequency:8000 Duration:1000 Amplitude: Stream: ]

 I've tried creating a second and third menu in the same scene in the same way but with the same result. I've also tried expanding the window size in case the items were hidden by the window.  Tasker has Accessibility permission. I also tried re-installing Tasker and starting anew but that didn't solve it.

Any ideas?

My guess is the text is pure white so you can't see it. This seems to happen often with menus.

Tap the 'item layout'(not the mag glass just left of the mag glass)
 -> mag glass
 -> A:Z
-> label

Within the label settings you can set the text color.

Simple aye... 🤔

Brilliant!! Thanks Rich D.  That solved it.  You're right.  Simple.  Just gotta have the smarts, I guess.

I have another. Not sure if it would be more appropriate to start a new string but here-goes.  I'm trying to get a handle on scenes.  I just did a step-through on my phone to make a new scene with volume sliders.  Worked like a charm.  On the phone, running Tasker 5.1m.  As described in the step-through on 'Androidauthority.com', in the scene element edit for the slider, under the tab for "Value Selected"  where I put the action "Media Volume", I can use the cris-crossed arrows and change the "Level" value from an absolute number setting to the variable instead (%new_val in this case).  On my tablet, running 4.9u4, there is no cris-crossed arrows button.

My question: Is that a deficiency of the version? Or is there a different way to select a variable in the older version?   Any help is appreciated.

Correct.  Fixed in the newer versions.

Or
is there a different way to select a variable in the older version?

You can't use a variable but you can set the value with a action in your task. Use action / scene / element value.
