This is an initial report. Even tho’ it has been subjected to peer review, it will have to be addressed by a wider range of anatomists. Most troubling is the lack of identification of “function.” Until it has been associated with a primary health function in the body, it is unlikely that it will be accepted by all as an “organ.” Function takes primacy over mere structure. But that is my view; I await the critiques of a wider range of more appropriate specialists. It is a bit like diseases such as “fibromyalgia.” We cannot find the “organ” responsible yet but it is increasingly clear that some dysfunction is occurring. Also a little like the “Pluto” discussion. Sometimes science changes its criteria for judgement as new understanding evolves. In any case, it informs a little about “early adopters” versus the consensus we have been arguing about in the past and will not start up again.
