DIALOGUE

We heartily invite you to a special discussion on April 12th 2017 organized by the BCSSS Research
Group Emergent Systems, Information and Society on Transhumanism introduced by a critical talk
by Janina Loh “The Utopia of Universal Control: Critical Thoughts on Transhumanism” and a
statement “The Ghost of Transhumanism and the Sentience of Existence” by Sarah Spiekermann.

Janina Loh is University Assistant in Philosophy of Media and Technology at the University of Vienna
and is writing her habilitation on the movement of trans- and post humanism.

Sarah Spiekermann is University Professor and head of the Institute of Management Information
Systems
at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and works on ethical design of IT.

INTERNATIONAL SYSTEMIC COLLOQUIUM
CALL FOR PAPERS

At the recommendation of our esteemed BCSSS member Andrée Piecq we announce an
extraordinary Systemic Meeting in Spain:

From June 28th to July 2nd 2017 the ​Sociedad Española de Sistemas Generales (SESGE)
in collaboration with the ​II Congreso Internacional América-Europa sobre los Valores del Quijote (IICAE17) invites to a Systemic Colloquium on "The Values of the Quixote".


Given the role played by the theory and methodology of Systems and Cybernetics in the discovery of the Place of la Mancha in Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote, the SESGE wants to invite all the participants at the IICIAE17 who could be familiar with the systemic approaches, to present a paper on the general subject “​The Quixote and Systems Theory”.

GUEST STUDENT

This spring Monika Pichler is guest student at the BCSSS to work on her Master thesis.
We are very glad to support her with her resarch, Monika is Erasmus Mundus student and takes part in The European Master Programme in System Dynamics (EMSD), a new BCSSS Cooperation Partner.

The EMSD is specifically designed for students who are interested in learning how to initiate strategic change in organizations and gives the students the opportunity to travel between four collaborating universities: 


Monika is well on track, we are happy about this promising international junior project!



VISITING SCHOLAR

General Systems Theory & McLuhan

Next April the Bertalanffy Center welcomes Ernest A. Hakanen, PhD, Professor of Communication
at the Graduate Faculty of Communication, Culture and Media, Drexel University, Philadelphia.

His research focuses on the relationship between General Systems Theory and Marshall McLuhan’s Media Theories as well as his Legacy Theories, such as Media Ecology and Remediation.

We are looking forward to his attendance and his exciting topic.



OUTGOING SCHOLAR

Thanks to over the years grown co-operations with several scientific partners and institutions there
is an fruitful exchange. Members of the BCSSS are invited to teach, give lectures or to be part of
workshops and meetings.

In April 2017 BCSSS Member Yagmur Denizhan is invited by the International Center for Philosophy
of Information, School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Xi’an Jiaotong University, China.

Denizhan is Professor at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Bogazici University, Turkey. She has been working in the areas of Systems Theory, Social Impact of Technology, Cognitive Science, Biosemiotics and Mythology. In Xi'an she will give lectures in the field of Systems, Cybernetics and Information.
