Hillary,

‘Continental philosophy’ is a term commonly used to refer to the development of philosophy following the ideas of Heidegger, and later Merleau-Ponty which led to the existentialism interest in what is present rather than the discussion of the behaviours of constructs into which it is believe that actual stuff fits.

To a considerable extent these things arose out of the disillusion that came about in western thinking following WWI.

An individual’s acceptance or otherwise of these ideas is closely related to the fundamental beliefs they hold in their worldview.

·        Scientific Systems Principles (IW18 Town Hall) - 2 Updates

"Aleksandar Malečić" <ljma...@gmail.com>: Feb 03 10:05AM +0100

People have different reasons for doing what they they are doing, but I (as
if it matters) have a lot of respect for this whole systems
philosophy/science/engineering thing. Other people's work in the field(s)
is at the same time an opportunity and an obstacle. Any disagreement with
for instance continental philosophy and existentialism (it's identical with
scientists and engineers doing their hard work and leaving to mere mortals
rich legacies and biographies) might be perceived as arrogance and
disrespect rather than an honest effort to join those disciplines
(philosophy, science, and engineering) into a single reality.

Can you briefly explain what you mean by ‘continental philosophy and existentialism’?

Best wishes

Yes, it's about the disillusion about the western thinking etc., about trying to add "something else" to the fact that people aren't usually very reasonable and rational (wars and organized misbehaviour as a good example). That additional content can go in two directions: questioning how we think and behave and questioning reality (and methodologies for figuring out reality). It's pretty much like "systems thinking" added to "regular" thinking but for different and not totally dissimilar reasons. On the other hand, philosophers tend to loosely use terms like "being" or "spirit" without caring much about their practical value. If I'm self-aware and thinking about awareness, I am actually thinking about thinking about thinking... A philosopher would pick some random number of the levels of being or manifestations of spirit (and probably create some new words in the process) and then keep on defending it no matter what.

What I believe is that I am very irrational with my "issues" affecting what I say and do, that I live in an indeterministic reality with at least some free will and creativity, that there's nothing non-physical about consciousness or anything else manifesting physically, that artificial self-awareness is impossible, that relationships are more fundamental than objects, and so on. Right or wrong, all of these claims are somehow related to systems.
