EUS - UES 2018
A Systemic Vision of the Crises
From optimization to change strategy?

10th Congress of the European Union for Systemics

15th to 17th October 2018
Brussels, Belgium

Although raised many times on other congresses, the theme of crisis is still not depleted. Indeed, questions related to visible effects of crises emerge in all human activities (economy, politics, culture, education, security, architecture…). A lot of measures urgently correct the visible symptoms of problems without trying to understand the underlying logics linked to them. Yet, crisis is a multidimensional societal phenomenon that cannot be reduced to immediate consequences.

The objective of the 10th congress of the European Union for Systemics (EUS) is to develop a systemic representation of the processes inherent to crises during interdisciplinary meetings, combined with a trans-disciplinary vision. This systemic representation will provide theoretic, methodological and practical tools applicable to specific cases of systems in crisis. All these resources will help the agent taking relevant actions for the benefit of a society willing to reach a high level of sustainability for future generations.

Call for Proposals: Sessions & Workshops

The sessions and workshops establish a shared thematic understanding that promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations. They offer participants the opportunity to exchange ideas on different themes, present results, and they also give the opportunity to share experiences, identify issues and / or explore future directions for research and practice.

Dead Line: 31th December 2018

Systems Science and Pattern Literacy

We are pleased to announce the start of our new BCSSS Research Group
“Systems Science and Pattern Literacy” founded by Maria Lenzi and Helene Finidori.

“We see Pattern Literacy as an essential component of new literacies, embracing domains of System Literacy, Computational Literacy, Visual Literacy, Coding Literacy, that evolve being challenged by dynamics of technological, societal and environmental changes.”

The mission of the Research Group is to explore the development of Systems to promote Pattern Literacy.

Systems to promote Pattern Literacy should integrate working theories, knowledge transfer, analogue
and digital methods and tools to activate embodied capacities for recognizing and mobilizing patterns
and to support design and application of patterns in praxis.

Maria Lenzi holds a Master in International finance from Moscow State University of International Relations/Russia and a Master of Advanced Studies in Management from Johannes Kepler University, Austria. Her special interest lies in application of cybernetic patterns for complexity challenges, self-organization and adaptive design.

Helene Finidori holds a Master of Science in Management from HEC-Paris. She pursues a PhD
at the University of Hull’s Centre for Systems Studies, is an affiliate researcher of the Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group (ECCO), and a Research Fellow of The Schumacher Institute.

Information in Evolutionary Systems, in Social Media and in Enhanced Humans

Supported by the BCSSS and the Institut für Design Science München the BCSSS Research Group “Emergent Systems, Information and Society” organised three workshops at the IS4SI Summit Gothenburg 2017 in June 2017. According to the summit subtitle “Digitalization for a Sustainable Society“ the group invited to the following workshops:

1. "Information in Evolutionary Systems” devoted to "Basic Research in Systems, Physics
and Philosophy" chaired by Rainer Zimmermann, BCSSS Scientific Counci member.

2. “Information in Social Media” focused on "Populism" chaired by BCSSS president
Wolfgang Hofkirchner.

3. “Information in Enhanced Humans” particularly discussing on “Trans- and Posthumanism”
chaired by BCSSS member Hans-Jörg Kreowski

BCSSS visiting student Monika Pichler completed successfully
her Master thesis "Smart City Vienna".

We are proud to announce the successfual completion of Monika Pichler's Erasmus Mundus Master Degree on "Smart City Vienna: System Dynamics Modelling as a Tool for Understanding Feedbacks and Supporting Smart City Strategies".

For her studies Monika took part in the European Master Programme in System Dynamics (EMSD), a BCSSS cooperation partner, which is specifically designed for students who are interested in learning how to initiate strategic change in organizations and gives the students the opportunity to travel between four collaborating universities, University of Bergen, New University of Lisbon, University of Palermo, Radboud University.

Through another connection in the BCSSS network, TINA Vienna - Smart City Agency, Energy Center & Urban Future Hub, Monika got valuable support and a wealth of new impulses for her project.

Besides her studies Monika volunteered for the BCSSS during the conferences emcsr 2016 and ISSS2017 Vienna. In this time we experienced her as a diligent member of our teams and highly motivated young researcher.

We congratulate Monika on her excellent degree and wish her every success for a bright future!

ISSS2017 Vienna

Systems Book Series 2017

In July 2017 Volume 9 of the BCSSS book series Systems has been published under the title "Creating, Analysing and Sustaining Smarter Cities. A Systems Perspective" by the authors Ian Abbott-Donnelly and Harold "Bud" Lawson.

This book brings together some of the best thinking about how cities work in today’s technology-enabled world. It reveals insight from many system perspectives to show in detail how cities can become smarter, be understood and meet the needs of the citizens. It explains how cities can sustain themselves under the increasing pressures of change.

An important thread between the authors is that from whatever point of view you start from in the city it is vital to be able to see the city as a complex adaptive system. Cities are extremely complex in their nature, being highly connected socially, economically and environmentally. The systems perspective allows underlying patterns, threats and opportunities to be understood and worked with in a constructive manner. All of the systems perspectives recognise that people form the true fabric of the city.
The architecture, the technology and the systems are transient and need constant management and renewal to continue to improve the lives of the citizens. The city is a diverse system of systems that attracts the majority of the planets population. It is wholly dependent on the natural systems in which it resides to supply it with clean air, usable water, food, energy and a valuable quality of life.
Without a systems perspective cities quickly become unsustainable. For the first time technology is now able to integrate the systems within cities making them more efficient and more effective while using resources wisely. Increasingly cities are working together across the globe to learn how make good use of technology to improve the lives of citizens. This book explains how this can be done.

A must read for people who operate city systems, design city policy and provide products and services to cities that aim to improve the quality of city life.
