Great meeting today...

Attendees:

Mary Simpson

Joseph Simpson

Kevin Dye

David Rousseau (no audio input)

Janet Singer

Main Theme:

Create a common, open-source, inference engine as a front end to many structural analysis processes.  Some candidate processes are:

  -- Open Process Handbook

  -- SysML design activities

  -- UML design activities

-- Other structured system design approaches.

Key Ideas:

The Augmented Model-Exchange Isomorphism (AMEI) is based on Warfield's Model-Exchange Isomorphism (MEI).  More information on the MEI is available at:

http://systemsconcept.org/html/Content/BM_1973%20.pdf

The AMEI provides a framework for the detailed discussion of different structural models.  The AMEI complements the Abstract Relation Type (ART) developed by the Simpsons.  The ART construct provides support for multiple matrices and operations mapped over these matrices.  Further information about the ART approach is available in Figure 2 of:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/237080843_A_Pragmatic_Complexity_Framework

A controlled natural language (CNL) approach will greatly benefit both system analysis and system requirements generation.  The AMEI is a starting point for a system CNL.

Observations regarding the AMEI:

Related to the property of transitivity, it was observed in some examples that there were multiple paths possible for a given relation.  Joe has named this the question of transitive routing.  Kevin suggested that it would be helpful to know what those paths of inquiry were.

Janet indicated that each of the components – prose, directed graph, matrix – can be viewed as ‘separable.’  Hopefully, in this effort, they can be considered as ‘jointly separable.’

The use of matrix components will involve an understanding of which matrix form applies:  binary, Boolean, or adjacency.  Each of these matrix forms has different meanings, hence will result in different logical and structural implications.

Kevin noted that these isomorphisms could be used in process modeling, substituting A’ for A, when considering reuse of processes.  Joe agreed, and indicated that the use of these representations as a ‘kernel’ is considered an advanced topic.

Actions:

Kevin and Joe will continue to work the software requirements development.

Mary and Joe will work up a new set of structured graphics that detail the transitive connections.  As proof that Joe is human, Joe believes that he stated some of the transitive connections backwards during the teleconference presentation.  The new structured graphics charts will attempt to limit the opportunities for this to happen in the future.

Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves.

All progress, therefore, depends on unreasonable people.”
