Dear James Martin
2017 starts eventful!
We are glad about two new publications as well as a workshop in cooperation with the
Department of Systems Analysis, University of Economics, Prague. We welcome the kickoff
of a new BCSSS research project and a call by the BCSSS research group Emergent Systems, Information and Society.
In particular we are very pleased to annonce you the 61st ISSS World Conference
from 9 to 14 July 2017 in Vienna. Save the date!!
PUBLICATIONS
Following the book "Emergent Information. A Unified Theory of Information Framework", Volume 3
of the series "World Scientific Series in Information Studies", published by BCSSS President Wolfgang Hofkirchner in 2013, 2017 he edited together with Mark Burgin (University of California, Los Angeles, USA) Volume 8, "The Future Information Society. Social and Technological Problems".
It will be published in March 2017.
"A Guide to Systems Research. Philosophy, Processes and Practice" is published since January 2017.
It is Volume 10 of the Springer Book Series "Translational Systems Sciences" with BCSSS President Wolfgang Hofkirchner as a memberof the Editorial Board.
WORKSHOP
In a three-day workshop Tomáš Sigmund, member of the BCSSS research group Emergent Systems, Information and Society and Assistant Professor at the Department of Systems Analysis, University of Economics, Prague, was invited to start a joint research project on "Systems Approaches to Information Ethics".
RESEARCH PROJECT
In cooperation of BCSSS and the Centre of Social Ontology (CSO) a new research project was commenced. During the first week of January, co-workers at the CSO, International Advisory Committee (IAC) members and collaborators led by Margaret Archer met in London at the Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF). A workshop was held on "Humanism under attack". Its aim was to
explore and critically discuss human enhancement in the perspective of trans- and post-humanism.
The publication of a first edited volume was agreed.
CALL
The BCSSS research group Emergent Systems, Information and Society calls for papers and
participation at the International Society for Information Studies (ISIS) Summit 2017 in Gothenburg,
the follow-up conference of the Vienna Summit supported by the BCSSS in 2015.
Choose your topic! Have a look at Transhumanism, Digital Netizens, Evolutionary Systems.
ISSS2017
Save the Date!
ISSS World Conference 2017 takes place in Vienna!
Venue: Messe Wien & Vienna University of Economics and Business
Vienna is internationally recognized as the cradle of Systems Science by the pioneering achievements and foundational work towards a General Systems Theory by Ludwig von Bertalanffy in the 1950s.
After more than 60 years, we offer a unique opportunity to present Vienna again as a strong
international hub for the Systems Sciences.
The International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) invites you to the 61st Annual World Conference in Vienna in cooperation with the Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science.
From 9 - 14 July 2017, scientists and practioners will meet and discuss under the heading:
"FROM SCIENCE TO SYSTEMIC SOLUTIONS. SYSTEMS THINKING FOR EVERYONE"
More than 300 contributions by international scientists from a diverse disciplinary background will deal with the present global challenges. At the interface of science, humanities, engineering and design,
the conference will present the latest insights of the interdependencies between social, ecological and technological systems, as well as practical examples of appropriate design skills for sustainable living concepts and meaningful technologies for a future-oriented humanity.
The ISSS2017 is a forum to bridge the gap between science and practice.
European and international business and industry representatives, as well as representatives
from politics and society, are invited to join and dive into this science-based dialogue in Austria.
Five thematic areas will highlight the creative tensions of humans, nature, organization,
and technology in the shared discourse: Government & Governance, Economy, Health, Ecosystems, Innovation & Education & Development
Participants will experience how complex ecological, social and technological systems work
together and how the Systems Sciences lead to sustainable solutions and practical applications.
Additionally the ISSS 2017 serves as a platform for young scientists to present their research projects,
ideas and solutions to an audience of international specialists and stakeholders.
With this event ISSS and BCSSS have set themselves the goal of establishing and expanding Vienna
as a crucial international hub for the Systems Sciences. More than 500 international guests are expected.
