Configuration Information:
Operating system: Windows NT 4.0

I am running NT4.0 on a Compaq laptop.
Loaded Winfax8.0 cleanly. I have 4 problems:
1. The controller does not have EXIT highlighted on the menu so I
can't exit from the program.
2. The subfolders under the DEFAULT folder were not allocated after
the install. When I clicked on the DEFAULT folder I got the message:
_____________________________________
The following error occurred when attempting to open a folder.
"Call failed."
The log being opened does not contain the expected unique identifier.
______________________________________

3. When a fax is received I get the following message:
______________________________________
Fax/Modem Alert - Compaq Global 336 Telephony Modem (PCMCIA)
Unable to create message.
Error in Message Store.
_____________________________________

4. No dial tone when trying to send a fax, I go through the steps of
creating the fax but after clicking the finish button the screen just
goes away.

I have uninstalled/re-installed WinFax twice. Also I download Patch
803 and installed it cleanly, but it didn't help either.

Thanks for your help.

Janie,

With the multiple issues you seem to I would recommend that you uninstall
and reinstall WinFax PRO using the following procedure.

Uninstall WinFax and use RegEdt32 to edit your System Registry, removing all
references to WinFax and reinstalling it. You should also use any text
editor to remove any references to WinFax from the Win.ini file.

CAUTION:
=======
Symantec and Microsoft cannot offer technical support on their products if
any changes have been made to the Windows Registry. A mistake could require
you to reinstall Windows, and could also result in permanent data loss or
corrupted files.

We strongly encourage you to back up your system Registry before making any
changes. Please make sure you modify only the key(s) specified. If you are
not comfortable editing the Registry, please obtain assistance from a
professional.

Note:
=====

The best way to back up the Registry in Windows NT is with the RDISK
utility. Consult your Windows NT documentation for information on using
RDISK.

Before uninstalling I would also recommend backing up the whole contents of
the WinFax\Data folder to a separate folder. This way you can then use the
Import option in the Files menus of the Log and Phonebook screens to
import any phone books or logs you want from old data.

After reinstalling WinFax PRO you can use any of the following methods to
install the update.

How to Install the Update Using LiveUpdate

1. Close all currently running programs except for WinFax PRO.
2. Check your version of WinFax PRO by choosing About from the Help menu.
3. Run LiveUpdate by choosing LiveUpdate from the Help menu.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.
Make sure you choose the correct version of the update depending on the
version of WinFax PRO you currently have installed on your computer.
5. Restart your computer after LiveUpdate has installed the update.

NOTE:
The update file is 6 MB in size if you are updating from 8.0/8.01 to 8.03.
The file is 697K if you are updating from 8.02 to 8.03.
The amount of time it takes to download the file will depend on the speed of
your connection.

Manually Downloading the Update

If you are having problems running LiveUpdate, download the patch file
directly from the Symantec FTP site.

1. Close all running programs, including WinFax PRO and the WinFax PRO
Controller.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and end all tasks except Explorer and Systray.
4. Go to the appropriate 8.03 update folder from the Symantec FTP site.
- If you are upgrading from WinFax PRO 8.0 or 8.01, go to the 80to803/
subfolder.
- If you are upgrading from WinFax PRO 8.02, go to the 802to803/
subfolder.
5. Download the file PATCH803.EXE into a separate, empty folder.
6. Double click the file PATCH803.EXE to install the update.
7. Restart the computer after the update has completed installing.
