Hi All,

Our electricity bill for the space arrived. It's over $1000 again.

We have done experiments and are convinced that we are responsible for a
frankly staggering amount of KWh used (as oppose to a meter reading
error or our circuit being connected to another unit).

To reduce our usage we've been putting the more hungry things like
aircon and vendo on timers. However the aircon has an issue. When power
is restored to it, it returns to it's last state. Which means that if it
happens to be on at 10pm on a Tuesday the aircon will restart at 10am
the following day when the timer restores power, and can potentially
stay on for 12 hours everyday until someone turns it off.

This is most likely what is causing the bill.

I'm going to put a "press here to turn on the Air con for 2 hours"
button by the door. After two hours it will send the ir command to turn off.

And that's where you come in.

I've built an IR capture circuit using IRlib and it's recognised every
device i have in the house. When i took it to the space, it did not
recognise the code from the aircon.
Has anyone had experience in building ir protocols from scratch or can
otherwise let me know the (arduino) code required to turn the aircon on
and off

raw output below.

The air conditioner is a
Panasonic CS-W24EKR (outdoor unit CU-W24EKR). The remote says Panasonic
but otherwise has not useful markings apart from A75C2624 4693 stamped
into the plastic on the back.

Yep,

I built a wifi-to-ir bridge, I’ll see if I can hunt up the code

cheers

I've done some decoding of my AC remote. The main difference between an AC remote and a TV remote is that when you press a button on the AC remote, it sends the whole state of the remote. E.g.
Fan:Auto, Mode:Cooling, Temp:22, Power:On

I don't think its the more normal RC5
One way to decode them is to vary one parameter and see what changes.

But it all you need is to turn the AC off, you could just record the 'AC OFF' command as raw data (mark and space periods) , and then replay it when needed

Hi Kris.

May I suggest a slightly different approach to the problem?

A few years back I started to worry about my bill.

The A/C has been installed back in '97 and was better for my bill than the "heaters" I used to use in winter prior.

Anyway, one way to maybe help with the power used by the A/C is to put double glazing in.

It cost me a bit but the improvements to heat loss/transfer and noise reduction are amazing!

Hope that helps.

Thanks Cat, but we rent the space. And given the hieght, size and aspect of the windows o don't think it would be economical.

I reckon a whirly bird in the roof might be worth it though.
