I would like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/911but for less money.
I can find the screen for sale on its own, it’s the driver board I can’t find anywhere.

but it is always out of stock. If they can sell the whole system for under $10 then the driver board and LCD must be for sale somewhere for well under that. The only issue would be if the screen board combo had a way to get a composite signal in.

I’m open to methods of converting composite/hdmi out to work with such a screen, as long as it doesn’t cost too much.

It’s all for a tiny console project running off a pi zero, ideally from the composite tv out, or from the hdmi if I can figure out a way to convert the signal into whatever cheap lcd/driver board combo I find.

Any thoughts on sourcing and signal conversion are most welcome.

Cheers,
Mike

Closest I found was 3.2 inch display for 10 dollars.
https://m.aliexpress.com/s/item/32699488794.html

If You're looking for that actual model then you should try taobao but unless you're very good with writing your own drivers and designing your own circuit board I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, I doubt very much that device is rendering from composite. It has cvbs out
But it will be spi or lvds internally.

Hints for tonal

Does it have to be 2inches?
Does it have to be composite?
There are a number of drivers for TFT libraries in the rpi kernel now. Take a look here:
https://github.com/notro/fbtft
It has lots of info on screens that work. The drivers are now in the mainline kernel so no need to install separately.
I recently bought one of these, and it works without issue (except that you can't control the backlight)

It has to be the same size as the adafruit 2" one as it's going into an existing case.
It doesn't have to be composite but it needs a decent refresh rate.
Last I looked driving the LCD from the Pi led to variable frame rates that could drop down to 10fps. Has this been fixed now?

As long as the backlight is on I don't need to change brightness settings.

The adafruit 911 ticks all the boxes but it's too expensive.
Would be great if I could find a screen that size, drive it natively, and get 30fps in RetroPie. I'll have a look at that link and see if any of the supported screens fit the bill.

Thanks
